    OPS (2017/2018)

    Altuve .957/.849
    Correa .941/.797

    Marwin .907/.625
    Springer .889/.834
    Reddick .847/.740
    Bregman .827/.807
    Yuli .817/.672
    Jake .815/.454
    Gattis .767/.746
    McCann .759/.664
    -------------------------

    Team .823/.746

    *Color Key
    Red = Major Regression (>-150 pts)
    Orange = Moderate Regression (-100 to -150 pts)
    Green = +/- 10% of last year
    Blue = Progression

    With altuve the regression is at home. He is still killing it on the road.

    I would have used the following:

    *Color Key
    Black = Black Hole(>-150 pts)
    Red = Major Regression (-100 to -150 pts)
    Yellow = +/- 10% of last year
    Green = Progression

    First, Marwin and Marisnick's stats are easier on the eyes if they are harder to read in black (for those using the Clutchfans Dark).
    Second, orange just does not convey the regression that most of the team has had.
    Third, green usually means good.

    LOL

    ???

    In this context, green is good considering 2017 was a career year by many of these players. No one progressed, so that color is irrelevant :(

    Based on typical usage of colors, red looks worse to most people while orange is used more for warnings like orange cones. Visually speaking, what is below is easier to understand for most people without needing to look at numbers or labels for colors (removing the joke about the black). I think it also conveys how bad the Astros hitters are versus what they did last year.

    Altuve .957/.849
    Correa .941/.797

    Marwin .907/.625
    Springer .889/.834
    Reddick .847/.740
    Bregman .827/.807
    Yuli .817/.672
    Jake .815/.454
    Gattis .767/.746
    McCann .759/.664

    Astros hitters don't deserve green regarding improvement from 2017 to 2018.

    PS. Sorry for derailing thread a little on aesthetic issues.

    The team OPS numbers comparison looks better than you might expect, mainly because of Max's .929 OPS this year. I didn't include him in the original post given his limited AB's last year. But I can admit he is probably the one player who has actually progressed.

    I think it's just a hangover from all the winning of the World Series and the celebrations afterwards. It happened to the Cubs and it took them most of the next season to get going. I think we are doing fine all things considered I mean look how the Dodgers are doing after the letdown of not winning the championship. I appreciate the insights on the regression of the offense but I feel with time the ship will be righted.:)

    Also to add as far as stats go we have just been unlucky in several games that we should have won. We are ranked #3 in offense including both leagues...#1 in pitching and #1 in fielding. Our record does not reflect how well we are doing considering how many 1 run games we have lost. I think on the last broadcast Kalas and Blummer talked about how our record should have us at 42 wins

    I dont buy the "Hangover" label because it implies last year was the norm. And while a couple guys (Altuve/Springer) may equal last years output, many/most wont. For a few (Marwin/Jake), last year might be the best year of their career and will never be equaled or approached.

    I agree partially about the Dodgers, but injury has played a role as well.

    If by righting the ship, you mean the offense will end up as good as last years, then id bet against it. If you mean overall, we will find ways to win more, then that is possible/probable if for no other reason, the schedule gets easier after this series (Red Sox).

    Lots of players (especially the secondary guys like Yuli, Reddick, McCann and MarGo) had unexpectedly great years last year. There's a good chance we'll have to live with offensive regression and try to make up for it with the pitching improvements. But Altuve/Correa definitely need to get back to last year's versions for the team to really dominate, I think.

    For us to repeat, two of those guys need to emerge. Maybe not 2017 numbers, but 85-90% as good. And the other two need to improve to at least average.

    Road Altuve has been awesome. May 2018 has been the worst month of Correa's career (.188BA/.649OPS). I expect him to improve.

    Maybe we need to re-sign Carlos Beltran for the intangibles.

    Oh no, we may not be able to repeat our historically great offensive output, the horror.

    The only player I'm moderately concerned about is Yuli, and at this time last season he wasn't exactly setting the world ablaze.

    We aren't gonna repeat last season, we never were,there were too many clear regression guys like Marwin, Marisnick and Reddick, but I would be willing to bet money that by years end this will be the second best offense in the AL, 3rd at worst. As is, we are currently 4th in Runs and OPS.

    When we can remove the Marisnick/Fisher cancer for good it will certainly help.

    You rely upon the pitching improvement and you exploit weaknesses in the system. For example, if rental bats are being under valued, you go and acquire a rental bat to supplement or replace a player that is struggling and the scouting department doesn't feel will bounce back. For example Marwin Gonzalez. If the Astros do not believe that Marwin will bounce back, the Astros target players like Beltre at the deadline.

    It’s a matter of getting back into groove. They are the defending world champions, so they are getting everyone’s “A” game. That’s what makes the likes of the Dynasty teams so special. And the Astros are playing well enough, and are weathering the storm well. Altuve and Gattis are hitting the ball good again. Springer and Bregman have been decent for most of the year. Correa is in the mist of an extended slump, but should hopefully get over it.

    Marwin had a special year last year. He caught lightning in a bottle for year. He’s solid, but not MVP caliber year after year. I like Marwin, but I think he is more in the realm of a .725 - .750 OPS. He was huge for the 2017 World Series run,and is an Astros legend in my humble opinion.

    Guriel is no spring chicken, even though he was a rookie last year. McCann is also getting older and his knees are starting to show their age. Marisnick is a gold glover who has always struggled offensively.

    The stars aligned right for the offense last year. But the offense is still good enough to support this amazing pitching staff.

    Jake needs a whole different color for how miserable his bat has been.

    Pitching will regress, Batting will progress.

    Long season.
