Go PS2/PS3/PS4.... The fact that PS2 came out before the xbox did, just shows you why the graphic card is a little faster than the PS2. It's just natural. It's like the difference between a newer Nvidia or ATI Radeon card. But I say, big deal. The PS2 is good enough. And you're buying from a soild company you know will put out good games and support: Sony. I've actually never had a problem with my PS2.
I think you can play online with PS2 for free, whereas the XBOX requires a subscription fee. Is this correct?
I own both, and I keep my PS2 in the closet, never bothered hooking it up after I moved a few months back. The only thing that I will probably use it for again is to play Metal Gear Solid 3, other than that I have no use for it. Xbox has better graphics and better games of the kind that I prefer.
That's right. Microsoft prefers the subscription based service for msn network. Plus, lock-in with TV settop box technolgoy (their "wet-dream" of controling the cable market). Sony is not going in this direction. They prefer the "open-source" model. A model based on partnerships. Microsoft HAS to do this (gouge) because they are subsidizing the xbox losses with their Office suite and OS licensing sales.
I was not an xbox fan until I found out that it could be modified and play all NES, SNES, and gameboy games. You can also burn xbox games directly to your hard drive. These features just made the system to good to pass up. I own all three systems and prefer xbox.
Are you for real? How do you do this. This can't be legal right? Does it involve sophisticated hacking? Because I'm not sure I have the time/ability for that... haha
Yes I am. I had a friend mod my box so I did not have to worry about it. You need to buy a mod chip and a new hard drive for the process to work. You then add emulators to the hard drive with the games for them. You can also play over 3000 original arcade games. Part of the mod chip allows you to play import games as well as copy rented games to your hard drive. If you want to play xbox live you need to own the game and flip a switch and turn off your mod chip.
If there are certain games you have to play and are only on one console, go with that. The GameCube has a much more limited number of games than XBox and XBox has less games out for it than PS/2. XBox has better graphics and one does not have to *wait* every time one wants to save unlike the PS/2 and GameCube. The two must have titles IMHO for XBox are KOTOR and Halo (coop). XBox Live is supposedly aweseome, haven't tried it yet. PS and PS/2 is the only supported console for most Final Fantasy rpg's. If you haven't played GTA3, yet, that's another consideration. The next generation of consoles isn't due for about another 18 months. Gamecube has a lot of cutesy party games with Mario and the other proprietary Nintendo characters, and several other unique titles, but it's such a small selection otherwise it's hard to recommend.
Are you saying Grand Theft Auto is only available for PS2? That's no longer true - you can get the platinum two pack (GTA and Vice City) for $50 on XBox now, I believe. Unfortunately, Nintendo's small selection includes some classics: Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart... and all rated incredibly highly... too bad it's so kiddy. I'm trying to decide between the three consoles right now, too.... Does anyone think this is a bad time to buy? How soon until the next generation comes out? If it's really soon, is another price decrease expected?
Most big name titles on XBox and PS2 that have intrigued me have come out on PC just a few months later. Nintendo doesn't do that so I bought them instead. They have a ton of great party titles like Mario Kart: Double Dash, Ikaruga (toughest game in existence, well maybe not as tough as Ghosts and Ghoulies but it's up there.), F-Zero GX, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Soul Caliber 2, and fun single player titles like Viewtiful Joe (2nd toughest game on Gamecube next to Ikaruga, but so much fun.) That said I get my RPG needs on PC, and other intriguing PS2 or XBox titles a few months later that are ported to PC. If Gamecube did that, I'd probably just wait a few months for them to come on PC as well. That said, there's a multiplayer technology called www.warppipe.com that lets you play multiplayer titled like Double Dash, Kirbys Air Ride, and I think 1080 online with the cube. Other games are being added on that list and I think it's a ton of fun
Nintendo just went down to $99 a few months ago. re: GTA3, right, just not going to be available on the gamecube ever. If you have friends nearby with one of the other consoles, consider buying the one they don't have and just have lots of get togethers. non-coop non fighting games on one tv - Gamecube rules, Supermonkey ball, Mario Kart, Bomberman, Super Smash Brothers, the party games, etc. Since it's only $99, buy a gamecube and another console? It will take quite a while for those next gen consoles to come out, and the rumor mill is that the PS/3 will be backward compatible with the PS/2. Dunno about XBox 2. Gamecube 2 may not even happen.
Gamecube 2 is so far referred to as the N5. According to Nintendo execs, it will be backwards compatible. That - and the continuing partnership with ATI and IBM (who has whored themselves out to every game company in the world) - are all anyone knows about the new system. There's a good chance both N5 and PS3 will come standard with wireless controllers. With the success of the Wavebird (one of the greatest wireless controllers you can buy) it's a natural progression for Nintendo and there've been rumors that Sony expects to take that route as well, but who knows. Either way, you're looking at 2005/06. And, IMO, the days of single-console homes will slowly die out (if it hasn't begun already).
Re: Gamecube successor Just keep seeing numbers and hearing rumors that Nintendo won't last that long, but who knows.
Yeah, Nintendo's been dealing with that for awhile now. "Rumors" and such. I think it's people who are still bitter about the old Sega Genesis wars. In any case, who knows. Nintendo has reportedly had the strongest winter/holiday season out of anyone. But a new system is so far pretty much confirmed.
The rumors of Nintendo's hardware demise were close to reality before the holiday season, according to news reports. Then, the winter sales were awesome and Nintendo actually had to make more Gamecubes (remember, they stopped production during the fall, which is one reason the rumors spread in the first place).
