Ariza only played 23 minutes in Game 1, because he got 5th foul at 9:35 left in 3rd. Score was 61-60.

Green replaced him to play remainder of 3rd Q when GSW made their move. Nene got 6 minutes, when he probably gets 0 minutes, due to ripple effects throughout the rotation.

First, for a defensive starter who doesn't miss games, only 14 such games in 8 years is a low number. Ariza only got more than 4 fouls in 8 games over last 4 years with the Rockets (not counting 2 overtime games).

This is a 38 mpg playoff key to Rockets.

Ariza getting those quick fouls has gone largely undiscussed.

Apparently Durant didn’t score much against Ariza the other night. Don’t have the stats but the Locked On NBA guys said no baskets against Ariza at all. Would want this validated, but if so a pretty condemning stat for his absence and how it affected us in G1

How many possessions did Ariza guard him?

Whatever the numbers is, he still only played 23 minutes vs his 38-39 and more during playoff season.

His 23 minutes and Green playing almost all the 3rd Q getting bamboozled on defense when GSW made their move is the story of the game, imo.

    23 minutes!!??

Gerald Green shouldn't be getting many minutes. He's not a good defender. How in the world LRMM isn't the second guy off the bench behind Gordon is beyond me. LRMM gave them fits defensively in the regular season. Game 2 will go Rockets way if four things happen: 1) get Curry in foul trouble early, 2) keep Ariza out of foul trouble and play him close to 40 minutes or more, 3) LRMM has a good defensive game/adequate offensive game, 4) Harden/Paul play well enough on both ends, not even necessarily matching Game 1 totals.

Have to also consider the implications of Ariza going out and Durant immediately getting in rhythm.

Those minutes were a massive boon for their confidence.

ariza was laughing in disbelief at 2-3 of those foul calls. but the officiating was a non-issue in that game and the officials assigned were probably just selected randomly.

The worst was when his guy dribbled off his own foot and they called a foul on Ariza.

Looking back on it, that play was most likely the straw that broke the camel's back.

Along with the play where GS should've had a backcourt violation and ended up scoring.

    Two huge momentum killers.

Ariza has been pretty terrible in the playoffs. I don't see how him playing more help us.

Ariza is one of the key reasons our defense works. He rarely makes mistakes and you can see him point out teammates mistakes. He also never wilts under pressure and hits timely, momentum killing threes or daggers.

Him playing 23 minutes might not be the reason we lost, but it certainly didn't help we had to send out a clueless Gerald Green or an injured LMM for significant minutes to cover his absence.

It's amazing how much people underrate Ariza even after all these years of him playing with the team...

He was the only one that defended Durant without getting scored on.

Pretty obvious how that would help us.
