Texans will have #5 pick in NFL Draft

The Texans will have the 5th overall selection in the 2004 NFL Draft.

    Order of Selection
    • The team with the lowest winning percentage at the end of the previous season drafts first in the NFL Draft.
    • The rest of the teams are placed in order from lowest winning percentage to the highest.
    • The Super Bowl winner drafts last, even if they do not have the highest winning percentage.
    • The Super Bowl loser drafts next to last.
    • Strength of schedule for the previous season is the first tie-breaker for teams with the same winning percentage.
    • Divisional and conference records are the next step in the tie-breaking procedure.
    • As a last resort, a coin toss is used to determine the order of selection for teams with the same winning percentage.
    • If a playoff and non-playoff team end the season with the same winning percentage, the non-playoff team selects before the playoff team.

    Top 10 picks & (opponents win/loss record)

    1. NYG (142/114)
    2. ARZ (137/119)
    3. OAK (132/134)
    4. S.D. (129/127)
    5. HOU (146/110)
    6. ATL (138/118)
    7. CLE or DET (137/119)
    8. DET or CLE (137/119)
    9. WAS (136/120)
    10. JAX (126/129)

What prospect should the Texans take with their first pick in the '04 Draft?

    My mock Top 10:

    1. NYG - Robert Gallery, OT Iowa
    2. ARZ - Eli Manning, QB Ole Miss
    3. OAK - Ben Roethlisberger, QB Miami (OH)
    4. S.D. - Roy Williams, WR Texas
    5. HOU - Vince Wilfork, DT Miami
    6. ATL - Sean Taylor, S Miami
    7. CLE - Larry Fitzgerald, WR Pittsburgh
    8. DET - Kevin Jones, RB Virginia Tech
    9. WAS - Stephen Jackson RB Oregon State
    10. JAX - Reggie Williams, WR Washington

Imo, the 5th and 6th picks between Houston and Atlanta could go either way. I like both prospects, but Wilfork would give us the size up front in the 34 defense to take on two blockers, opening up pass rush lanes for the linebackers. Wilfork would also be of service, as the Texans were, i believe, 29th against the run this year.

Also, if Fitzgerald is unable to enter the draft, Kellen Winslow would be a good fit for Cleveland. And San Diego may think about Tommy Harris or Wilfork with the fourth pick as well.

Hmmm, I always though in a tie breaker was the strenght of schedule, teams with the lowest percentage SOC was given the nod, not the strongest SOC. Kinda goes with the okay you suck really bad going 4-12 with a SOC .400, while another team that went 4-12 had a SOC .600.

    Do you have a link?

The top four teams all finished with an overall record of 4-12 and 1-5 in division play. In a tie-breaker, such with picks 1-4, strength of schedule is the first breaker.

The only picks in the top 10 that will have a problem are the seventh and eighth overall. Because Cleveland and Detroit both have the same strength of schedule percentage and both went 5-11 in the regular season and 2-4 in the division, they will have to flip a coin for their respective spots.

In an event of a tie, the system rewards the team with the harder schedule.

Randy Starks or Sean Taylor will be the pick. Most probley Starks because Walker will probley be gone and Payne is having a 3rd surgery. Starks already plays in a 3-4 defense so that wont be nothing new. Sean Taylor would replace Marlon and he is said to be better than Roy Williams.

    My revised Top 10:

    1. S.D. - Eli Manning, QB Ole Miss
    2. OAK - Ben Roethlisberger, QB Miami (OH)
    3. ARZ - Tommie Harris, DE/DT Oklahoma
    4. NYG - Robert Gallery, OT Iowa
    5. JAX - Larry Fitzgerald, WR Pittsburgh
    6. WAS - Stephen Jackson RB Oregon State
    7. CLE - Roy Williams, WR Texas
    8. DET - Kevin Jones, RB Virginia Tech
    9. ATL - Vince Wilfork, DT Miami
    10. HOU - Sean Taylor, S Miami

Although the Texans have the 10th pick, I think they are in a good postion to move up a few spots. Arizona and the Giants may be looking to move down. Arizona may look to move down if both Manning and Roethlisberger are gone by the third pick. Enter the Texans and Henson. Houston could swap spots with the Cardinals and give them the rights to a needed QB in Henson for Arizona's first pick in the second round. Not a bad decision on the part of Arizona as they will still get a top ten pick plus a QB in Henson, who potentially could have been a top 3 pick, for a second round draft choice.

New York, on the other hand, could be looking to move down for other reasons. The Giants may look to move down to get an extra pick somewhere in the draft. They could move down to the 10th spot and still be able to pick up Gallery or Andrews, whom they desperately need, as well as adding a 3rd - 5th round pick.

My guess is that on draft day, both Arizona and New York will be looking to move down. If Houston moves up, a more likely spot to move would be that of the 4th pick, occupied by the Giants. If the Texans move up to either position, look for them to take Tommie Harris to play DE in the 34 or Wilfork to play the nose. I like Taylor, but should the Texans move up, I feel the 3 or 4 pick is just too high to take a safety. Dallas' Roy Williams went as high as 6th, but that's Roy Williams.

p.s. Thanks mods for changing the thread title.

I would have chosen to go with Winslow if we hadn't drafted Joppru. I say defensive line is the way to go! Trade down and pick up another high pick. Best available d-line and o-line!

    Top 10

    Chargers- Ben Roethlisberger
    Raiders- Larry Fitzgerald
    Cards-Eli Manning
    Giants-Tommie Harris
    Jags- Roy Williams
    Redskins- Shawn Andrews
    Browns- Will Smith
    Lions- Kevin Jones
    Falcons- Robert Gallery
    TEXANS-SEAN TAYLOR

Wilfork is top 10 worthy but I think he will slip to maybe 12 or 13 because of his weight.

    My mock draft 1.0:

    1. ARZ* - Eli Manning, QB - Ole Miss
    2. OAK - Roy Williams, WR - Texas
    3. SD* - Shawn Andrews, OT - Arkansas
    4. NYG - Robert Gallery, OT - Iowa
    5. JAX - Larry Fitzgerald, WR - Pittsburgh
    6. WAS - Stephen Jackson RB - Oregon State
    7. CLE - Ben Roethlisberger, QB - Miami (OH)
    8. DET - Reggie Williams, WR - Washington
    9. ATL - Sean Taylor, S - Miami
    10. HOU - Tommie Harris, DT - Oklahoma

** Arizona swaps 1st round picks with San Diego and gives up additional 2nd rounder (in 2005 draft) and 4th rounder (2004) for rights to #1 pick.

Yes, I'm ALL over the place, but the draft rarely goes how people expect it to. Just offering a different opinion...

Look for Washington to go DE or DT. Their front line is a bigger joke than their RB's.

Sean Taylor seems like the biggest can't miss prospect this year. He could go anywhere 1-8. I seriously doubt he drops to 10. BUT, crossing the fingers he does.
