What are your thoughts on the "cultural appropriation" critique? Is it a completely invalid concept, are there situations where it is appropriate but it can be overblown by overly sensitive people, or do you think it is a widespread, pervasive problem?

It is whiny, SJW nonsense. Wear whatever you want. Have your hair however you want. Sing whatever you want. Cook whatever you want. No one owns a culture, and you can participate in whatever culture you like.

It's really strange to me. This has been going on as long as cities and civilization has existed. I think it's more about just a few loudmouths on social media being outraged about anything more than it is a general sentiment among the vast majority of people.

Cultures have to integrate in order for the greater society to succeed.

the wifey loves her slutty chun li comic con outfit.

    It’s a beautiful dress.

    Megaphone effect of social media.

I don’t agree with not sharing your culture. I see it as a positive.

14k means what in term of retweet? Wonder have anyone actually done some quantitive study on retweet vs opinion held by the population?

I doubt any significant number of Chinese (btw, this type of dress is part of many Asian culture) see this as anything other than someone wanting to wear something nice looking and different.

These Chinese folks are just angry that the white girl looks better in the dress than 3 billion Chinese do because she actually has a figure.

Yeah, that doesn't bother me. I think there are bigger things to get riled up about.

She obviously wore this because she thought it looked cool, she didn't mean any disrespect, I just don't get the issue.

Also, it seems to only come up when white people do it, unless someone can bring forth another case?

I know Kenyon Martin said that Jeremy Lin was culturally appropriating hair all while having Chinese tattoos, so there's that. That was a fun story.

After 25 years of white suburban kids acting like black urban kids, hasn’t this ship sailed?

Went through some replies to this nonsense -- i've noticed how Asians will quickly bond as if the perceived attack is against them all only to turn on each other just as fast when it's only one country's culture being 'appropriated'. Lots of old war wounds that a cheap Chinese dress is unlikely to somehow bridge -- centuries of cultural hatred -- imagine if a Korean or Japanese girl had the audacity -- imagine if a black American girl wore it...

    This gem is timely...

Matt, how do you feel about Apu?

Beyonce got flack for dressing up in Indian make up. Rihanna did something at a mosque. It didn't go well when Pharrell did a photo shoot with traditional native american head dress.

    It isn't just white people.

See, I haven't heard of things, how much of an uproar did they actually cause?

I feel like I've seen Wu-Tang get away with this for decades now though. Kendrick Lamar has been going around as Kung-Fu Kenny for a while. Is that stuff just cool or cultural appropriation? I do feel like a white artist wouldn't be able to get away with doing stuff like that, at all.
