I have always liked to go to Galveston. I like to relax on the beach and ride on the ferry. Just want to take my mind off from stressful work and have a peace of mind. The great thing about Galveston is that there is only 45 minutes drive from Houston. How about you, guys? Did you like to spend some time in Galveston?

Sure. It's not the nicest beach but the easy access and not having to spend the night down there is great. I usually prefer to go to Surfside for day trips, though.

Growing up and into my late 20's I used to go all the time. During highschool and college damn near went every weekend. I haven't been as much over the last 6-7 years. Its not the best beach, but its our beach. At times the water can be nice but others damn near repulsive (seaweed washups season)

Otherwise, its always going to have a close place in my heart.

My wife, who grew up in New York and Pennsylvania, enjoys going, even if we're just going down there to leave for a cruise.

The scenery around the Gulf, to me, is unlike any other in the country. It's beautiful. The nice thing about going south to Galveston is that once you start to leave the strip mall of Houston, around like, the south side of League City, the scenery just starts to change.

All of a sudden, you're seeing palm trees, marsh fields, and then that gives way to water, shrimp boats, and sea birds.

It's amazing how the scenery changes from where I grew up, which, back then, was mostly piney woods in Magnolia, to urban strip mall, to water and palms.

And god, I love open water.

I love Galveston, people absolutely take it for granted.

Anyway lots of memories and yes even with the Mississippi river run off I'll take it

I had a little shorter drive leaving from Clear Lake and 3 different route options but heading to the beach was a huge part of my life growing up.

I like Galveston, but from a purely beach experience? Nothing special. This is my local beach now:[IMG][IMG]

I miss Galveston, no so much for the beach (though I spent a lot of time on the west end back in the day) but I miss the Strand and a lot of the non-beachy stuff especially in the Spring and Fall when it's not crowded and hot. Great place to take a girl for a weekend getaway.

I've had high-and-low feelings for Galveston.

As a kid, I seldom went. I knew the beach was crap.

As a young adult, I started to er-embrace Galveston. Wanted to enjoy it, but still felt like it was crap.

I discovered that there are good and bad ways to visit Galveston. If you're prepared, and go to the right places, with the right equipment, the beach is... not-as-crappy and can be enjoyable.

When I visit other beaches... Destin, Pacific Coast....they remind me of just how crappy Galveston's beach is. But, as others have said here, it's our beach.

Aside from the beach, the community feels... meh... not strip-center crap, but it feels old (not in a good way), run down.....it's as if the city is the personification of old, rotting sargassum (which is also found in abundance on the beach).

Its just the scenery in Galveston that made me feel relaxed. I know the beach is not good, but at least it is closer to Houston.

We are only major city in Texas that has a beach nearby.
