It does not account for teams with good unguarded FG defense like the Spurs last year.

 

Run different sets, actually run more, quicken the pace, make sure guys get shots from their best spots, attack the basket more, run sets through Harden / Tucker / Capela / Joe on the block. Even CP3.

 

you don't think their best spots is the ones they went to waiting for the ball and shot a wide open 3?

or once they're in their spot you want them to run around a couple more times just for added accuracy?

attack the basket more? harden has been attacking the basket more than the reg season.. not enough?

The whole point of this year was that we could win in a number of ways. Defense and the midrange were all things we improved on. Against Minnesota if we keep running our system there will be no worries.

Against the best teams in the NBA, of which we are one, it’ll just come down to shot-making. But when has it ever not? In a seven game series both teams know the other one like the back of their hand. A made or missed shot here or there turns the series. You just gotta put yourself in as good a situation as possible to get the odds on your side. Nothing is guaranteed though.

Missing wide open shots is definitely a problem . It is probably a problem without a cause and without a solution... which makes it incredibly frustrating.

Until GS won a chip , there was the maxim "a jump shooting team can't win in the playoffs "

There WAS some line of thought to this ... people hypothesized that more physical defense from the other team and increased energy expenditure on defense by the shooting team could cause percentages to drop .

When you account for the fact that playoffs are a relatively smaller sample size and things like cold streaks could cause you lose a series ... I can understand not wanting to form your offense around shooting .

On the other hand , spacing and open shots have so much value .... that eventually you'd be foolish not to shoot 3's .

I'm torn on this . I think the rockets shooting struggles could be as simple as random variation and that a regression to the mean is inevitable..... however the question remains when ?

However , it's not outrageous to suggest that there are tangible factors that are effecting the team's shooting right now . In game 2 , for example, the defense was incredible. Could the increased focus and energy expended on defense have detracted from focus and legs while shooting ? It's not a wild claim , but you would be hard pressed to prove it .

I'm glad the problem isn't that we aren't getting open shots ..,, but that would usually mean (for our offense at least ) that we are getting open layups or midrange. Missing open threes isn't a schematic problem ... but it is a problem.

 

If guys can't shoot open 3s, go back to da basics open mid range 2 (last resort), layups, drives, alley oops, dunks. Sometime just making any shot will boost ones confidence.

 

I’m not particularly confident Tucker and Ariza would shoot a significantly better percentage on long 2s than 3s anyway.

 

Minnesota analysts are saying the same thing about the Twolves. Saying that if they can continue to hit their threes like they did on Saturday it will give them the best chance to win.

 

Excellent column, @Clutch. It was painful watching players like Tucker missing those corner threes again and again, shots where he's normally money. James seemed intent on getting Tucker off the snide, feeding him over and over (there's a pattern here, somewhere). Harden probably should have gone away from Tuck sooner, but he was open! Maybe a little more ball movement wouldn't hurt. Try to get the guys more in a rhythm, but if they keep missing open shots, we're in deep trouble. Heck, if we were to lose tonight because of it, we're in deeper trouble.

Hit the freakin' open shots and close out this series.

1 good quarter out of 16 in this series shows us exactly what our potential is. If we can get anywhere near that level regularly we're going deeeeeeeep.
