I took my sister to the dentist to get her wisdom teeth removed. While waiting I over heard a conversation from the front desk about dental implants. For one tooth it would be about $3100. The lady needing the tooth said she thought it would be $900. The secretary said yes $900 for the tooth and $2200 for everything else. I do not know which tooth she needs, or what everything else is, but man that seemed high. Anyone know more about dental implants and the cost?

$3100 seems low. Where I live in the DC area, a dental implant can run in the $6,000 range. The cost of the dental implants depends on the material used - titanium and zirconia. Here's my thought on dentistry based on my recent experience and having talked to some dentist friends. Dentistry in the US is a field that's becoming more and more about making $$$ to the detriment of the patient. A majority of the time, recommendations by your dentist is unnecessary so they can pad their wallet. They run a private practice, they have to eat and feed their families. If you have insurance, they will milk every penny out of you. I recently went to a new dentist who seemed to have decent reviews by friends and online. The first thing they do without even looking in your mouth is take a million x-rays. Remember this, x-rays are harmful to your health due to the radiation (even at low doses) and they are absolutely unnecessary unless the doctor wants to look further into as specific issue with your teeth. Now, if you haven't gotten x-rays done in many years, and the doctor needs to look beyond the surface, sure get it done. But if I have a dentist that recommends updated x-rays every half year to a year, I call them BS and would reject their request. Second of all, if you have a slight infection in the root of your tooth, many times the endodontist would say get your tooth extracted and put a dental implant in there! That will cost you $6000-$9000 and most insurance don't pay for implants, so it's all out of pocket money. The procedure is the extreme limit and unless your mouth is swollen and you're in extreme pain, a cheaper alternative is to get re-treatment on your infected tooth. It will cost you 1/3 the price of extraction/dental implant. But many endodontist won't tell you about this because it's less $$$ for their pocket. My advice is do your research, be weary of all these expensive procedures recommended by dentists. Unless you're in extreme pain or they can clearly show you of issues with your teeth, I'd stay away from these expensive procedures. Many times, they can make things worse with follow-up infections.

I have one and just the tooth alone was $1600. That was not the other piece/pieces drilled into my gums or the years of surgery that was done. It is not a cheap process at all.

Seems about right. I am in the process now of getting a single implant. 1300 for the implant root, around 250 for the bone graft.
This was done in January. Healing is about done and will get abutment and crown placed next (total 1600).

Surgery for the reason I needed an implant to begin with and then to prepare for it. I messed up my mouth pretty bad back when I was like 14 yrs old. Had to wait until I was 18 to get the implant. Also, in my case I had literally no bone in my canal so they had to remove other bone, add into my canal and then let it grow so they had something to drill the rod the tooth sits on to. My case was not ordinary and took years and years.
