We have had a couple of music threads recently and one name that I seem to see in them is Jack Johnson.

I was looking at his 2 CDs, "Brushfire Fairytales" and "On And On", and thinking about getting them soon. However, I wanted to hear what some people here that like him say about him. It seems like he is a folk-acoustic guy, but is he like John Mayer or Pete Yorn or guys like that?

If you like Coldplay and Dave Matthews Band, will you like JJ?

The other one has to do with the Strokes' lastest CD, "Room on Fire". I have "Is This It" but it is one of the many CDs that I haven't listened to in awhile, but it was a worthy purchase. For those that have "Room on Fire", was it better than "Is This It?"

Maybe, one day I will have everything I want when it comes to music, but I keep finding out about new things.:)

Thanks in advance.

I would figure you should like Jack Johnson if you like DMB and Coldplay. I haven't had a chance to get On and On, but "Brushfire Fairytales" is pretty good. You can download some live Jack Johnson from here to see if you like it. I suspect you will . . .

What about Jason Mraz - I saw him on Austin City Limits the other day and it was pretty good - any other thoughts on him?

His name was mentioned as a "similar artist" to Jack Johnson, but I don't know anything else about him.

Jay Z...i have Jason Mraz's CD, and I'd definitely pick it up if I were you.

He cd is alot like Some Devil by Dave Matthews.

Also, Jack Johnson is the ****. If you like Ben Harper or G Love and Special Sauce, you'll dig Jack Johnson.

In my opinion the new Strokes album is more of the same. The really haven't changed the formula from the first record. That seems to have made all the critics and fans happy, but it kind of bores me personally.

I'd save your money if you already have the first one.

I don't them (yet) but a friend of mine plays them pretty often, I like his sound - cool and mellow (not sleepy mellow though).

Jack Johnson is awesome...I don't think that he has the skills that Ben Harper does on the guitar, but if you like Ben Harper, DMB, and Coldplay, you will like Jack Johnson.

This brings it to the point. I would also say that a lot of people who like the mellow Sublime songs dig J.J.

He's lyrics are very earthbound and anticapital. Bad tongues may say he's a surfin' beach bum making relaxed songs.

But the sound is really great. Perfect hangover songs.

Strokes:
I really liked "Is this it" but I think in the future I may even like the new one more. It really sounds very similar to the first one. But if it's great then I don't complain. I also have about 5 Ramones LP's and they sounded often the same.
And to say it with the Strokes own words: "We just wanted to make to which you can dance in a silly way."
Basta.

I've downloaded quite a few JJ songs featuring Ben Harper, and damn they're a nice listen. Especially the live acoustic songs.

IMO, Jeff Buckley did what Jack Johnson does but better. Ben Harper, Jason Mraz, Duncan Sheik, Rufus Wainwright, John Mayer, David Gray, et al, are all in that male singer/songwriter, sorta folksy, kinda rootsy, rock thing.

I like a lot of them, but they are starting to get a little repetitive.

If you like that stuff, listen to anything produced or engineered by John Alagia. That is his thing. His credits include:

Dave Matthews
John Mayer
Jason Mraz
David Gray
Edwin McCain
Ben Folds
Chris Whitley
Vertical Horizon

I disagree completely.

First, no solo artist can really compare to a whole band.

You can say Jack Johnson/Ben Harper/John Mayer = DM, but there's no way that they are that similar to DMB as a whole. I actually think that all three of the above mentioned are as good as or better than Dave on the guitar(I'd say Harper definitely and probably Mayer), but not one of them can compare lyrically. And not one of them has a band that can compare to Stefan, Boyd, Leroi, and Carter(And Butch, Tim, Viktor, etc...).

And Ben plays all the instruments on his solo album. He's one of the most underrated artists out there right now.

I'm hearing more melody and better songs on the 2nd Strokes' album than I did on the first. Write that down.

Even scarier is that he was a session drummer before switching over to piano.

I bought "Brushfire Fairytales" and "Room on Fire" on Friday.

The Johnson CD gets better and better after each listen. I love the way the drums sound on that CD. Favorite track is track #5, "Flake", plus it has the coolest album/CD cover ever!

"Room on Fire" is not as good as "Is This It", I think, but I do like most of the songs, especially the heavily Cars influenced "12:51".

I will probably go ahead and buy some John Mayer, Jason Mraz, and this Ben Harper CD called "Fight for Your Mind".
