I am posting this thread because I am wowed that most of the NBA fans who are younger than 23 do not acknowledge the players of the 80's and how much more fundamentally sound they were compared to the overpaid athletes of today's generation. This is a posting in regards, to my last post in the thread below, educating the poster how there is no way the players of today are near the caliber of yesteryears:

Anyways, this link below highlights just how awesome Magic was during his rookie season:

    http://www.nba.com/history/finals/19791980.html

    [Some excerpts from the article:]

The next morning the Lakers arrived at Los Angeles International Airport for their flight to Philadelphia and learned that Abdul-Jabbar wouldn't be making the trip. His ankle was so bad that doctors had advised him to stay home and try to get ready for Game 7. Westhead was worried about the effect the news would have on the team. In a private meeting, the coach told Magic he would have to move to center. No problem, the young guard replied. He had played center in high school and loved challenges such as the one he was about to face.

When the team boarded its flight to Philadelphia, Magic plopped himself down in the first-class seat always set aside for Abdul-Jabbar. Then he went through Abdul-Jabbar's normal routine, stretching out in the seat and pulling a blanket over his head. This done, Magic looked back at his coach and winked. "Never fear," he told his teammates. "E.J. is here."

    [/end]

Read the rest of the article, it's truly amazing and having witnessed the game when I was 4, it still bring tears to my eyes, as it was the pinnacle of all championship games. It combined the true love of a sportsman, along with a fantasy ending that no one could ever write.

One thing that always strikes me when I see video clips of 80s games is the speed. I watch an NBA game today and compare the two, and it just seems to me like everyone is much faster and quicker in the NBA today than they were then. The increase has been gradual and league-wide, so you don't really see it noticeably unless you compare clips from one to the next. I think if you took a lot of the best players from today's NBA and put them in the league back then, they dominate more than do now. And vice versa, if you took some of the better players from the 80s and had them play now against the zone and these quicker defenders, I think their numbers would go down. But that's all very subjective.

    The night I was born.

(My parents are hoop freaks, they should have known better than to go at it nine months before the Finals)

Mom, Pop, two other couples and two other guys besides that were sitting down to watch the tape delay at 10:30 CST when I started kicking and Mom's water started breaking.

Eight hours later, I saw the light.

Still pissed about myself for missing that game ...

I don't believe we are referring to the era's correctly anymore. Forgets the 80's-90's. There is only before-olajuwon (BO) and after-olajuwon era's (AO). Todays date is AO 2.

    Point Guards...

Magic, Stockton, Zeke vs. AI, Kidd, Payton

Titles and stats favor then. Throw in Magic's freak-like abilities and versatility along with Kidd's shooting and Then wins in a landslide.

    Shooting Guards...

Jordan, Drexler, Dumars (could be others) vs. Kobe, Tracy, and Houston (could be others)

Physicality, titles, defense and clutchness favors Then. McGrady causes matchup problems, but he's also the weakest psychologically. Edge: Then

    Small Forwards...

Bird, Worthy, 'Nique vs. Dirk, Pierce, Vince

Please. Bird's name on the list gives the edge to Then. "Nique was at least as good a dunker as Carter (I think better). Then wins.

    Power Forwards...

Malone, Barkley, McHale vs. Garnett, Webber, ?

Garnett's good. Really, Really good. Slight edge to Now.

    Centers...

Dream, Ewing, DRob vs. Shaq, Yao, ?

Depth of quality favors Then, Shaq (and current ref styles) favors Now. Even.

Admittedly, my bias favors Then and the Nows have not completed their careers.

I was with you until this one. No way do the "Now" boys stay with Malone, Barkley, and McHale. Consider that Malone and McHale are arguably the 2 greatest PF's to play the game. They both are also good-to-great defensive players. They also could bruise you to death, as could Barkley.

Garnett may go down as the most versatile player to play the game, if not the greatest PF to play, but Webber pales in comparison, and unless you want to throw Duncan in as a PF, the now list is overmatched.

How can you not add Duncan as a PF? It's the position he's played his entire career. Garnett's the questionable one, he's played SF as much as PF over the years.

I'd give the edge to "Then" on depth, but barring an injury or position change TD's going to go down as perhaps the greatest PF ever to play the position.

Arrrgh! Can't believe I blacked out on Duncan. Make PF a tie.
