I recognize that. And I don't really want to leave the rural communities without parcel or letter service altogether. But with the way the market has evolved, it seems unreasonable to maintain this huge infrastructure for the sake of this minority. There is more than one way to skin a cat, and I prefer market-based ones anyway. This isn't a business the government should be in. I think we could have a slimmer taxpayer participation by doing something to incentivize businesses to serve those customers instead of having a company mandated to do it. But even if we cannot get businesses to deliver to the remote corners at an affordable price, I think that's acceptable as well. We don't expect the gas company to run a line out there, nor the sewer or power company. They don't have automatic trash service or cable. You've got to drive a ways to get to a grocery store. I don't see why we should expect to be able to get mail no matter where you live when you don't have this expectation for all these other things that are more important to daily life.
Well we'll have to disagree. Now that I live in the Midwest, I have a genuine appreciation for rural communities and the need for the federal government to provide support (even if many of those communities are Trump voters). Ending rural mail service is a death sentence for rural communities. Literally, businesses cannot function without postal service. Even with the decline of mail in this country, its almost impossible to operate without regular mail service. This is as destructive a move as ending something like Medicaid in rural states. Rural hospitals would die instantly without it as too many people would just rely on the ER. Just imagine for a second that you run a business in a rural community. How do you plan on shipping things without a post office? Good luck getting regular mail delivery in a privatized world. Rural mail is a money loser. Same with shipping. We're being pushed into insane fiscal choices because one party enjoys running massive deficits and then insisting that the most vulnerable pay for it. This is the same dumb choice we make with other things like entitlements, education spending, etc... If you want to know why so many rural communities voted for Trump, this is why. When we just shrug our shoulders and say too bad, you can't blame them for being jaded. And its hard to blame anyone from a rural community for supporting Trump or Bernie.
We can disagree. This thread is about whether or not Amazon is good for the USPS, not whether the USPS is good for America. So I derailed a bit. My feeling is that if the contract between USPS and Amazon isn't good, the fault would lie with the USPS because it isn't run like a business. But I will add that Trump isn't doing the rural USPS/Amazon customer any good by complaining about their contract. Delivery of Amazon parcels to these rural communities are currently being subsidized by US taxpayers because USPS doesn't cover its costs. If Trump effectuates anything to get a better deal for USPS from Amazon, it will increase the prices to deliver to these places. So, if they are voting for people like Trump to stick it to people like me, they've done messed up.
I have a family member with 25+ years with USPS. Amazon SAVED the Post Office. They HEAVILY rely on Amazon to stay above water. Since Congress won't fix that DUMBASS requirement of funding pensions for 75 years UPFRONT (Thanks Republicans), Amazon has been a life saver for USPS. That 75 year requirement was put in place to try to kill the Post Office and make a transition to private mail services. The problem is...No Private Company wants to deal with letter mail/Junk Mail; They only want package delivery. You want to pay $3.00-$5.00 to mail a letter that cost $.50 cents now.........make the post office private.
One cannot claim that he is for free markets, then turn around and try to regulate an enterprise because of some bizarre reason. If Amazons deal with the USPS is not equitable to one of the parties, it is incumbent on them to find a private solution, not governmental interference.
this guy is an idiot. You can't single out a company and hurt them with political influence here because you got your feelings hurt
I would love that. Maybe then I'd stop getting all this stupid junk mail. Outside of package delivery, why do we still deal with mail? I haven't mailed a letter in years. Therefore, it's obvious no one else has a use for it. The UPSP should be sold to a private group and if it dies, well so be it. You'll just have to send your wedding invites online and skip your Christmas cards
Except the Constitution requires the Postal Service. Um......MANY business still use physical mail. Many people still don't use email. Your Credit Cards and Debit Cards come thru the mail. Hard copies of bills, official correspondence. Not to mention Netflix is big for them (Not everything is streaming....for various reasons).
My credit cards don't come through mail, they come through fed-ex. Everything can be sent by fed-ex or priority mail. No need for stamps in this day and age. Hard copies can be printed on line. Privatize the USPS. Free market. If someone can't afford the rates than too bad. Don't need mail any more.
Look....here’s one optimistic way of looking at it. How many thousands of people signed up for Trump university believing Trump would make them personally rich? Virtually all of those same people figured out that they had been conned and sued his ass in the end. Trump is certainly conning his voters on economic issues like trade and manufacturing. We see it happening now with his trade war and his tax cut for the wealthy. Virtually the only base he isn’t conning are the ones in it for the culture wars/liberal trolling, and the ones who are so into fighting abortion and human rights that feel like he’s worth supporting. I know the blue collar Trump voters will see it, but I just don’t know when. When the evangelical voters will see it who knows if ever. Those folks are officially off the rails anyways.
When USPS is about to go run out of money, is our great leader Trump going to give them money from his own pocket to continue? The greatest businessman to ever walk the earth, lol.
And if you live in a rural area. Enjoy weekly delivery of mail to a post office box 10 miles away from your house.
Um...Priority Mail IS USPS. FedEx is MUCH more expensive to use. Um......most postage is printed online....just like UPS and Fedex. You do realize UPS and FedEx transfer small packages to USPS for final delivery when it makes since for them. Most Credit are sent by mail still. The cost of FedEx and UPS for small items is cost prohibitive for many. Those companies do not like letters and small items because it doesn't make money for them. The majority of items mail/shipped today are small items/letters. No business will make money doing the job of the USPS under the same pricing constraints.
Trump isn't for free markets. We haven't seen a president as opposed to free markets as him in a long time.
