You people are crazed. There's no reason why he can't be hard on the basketball court, but not off of it. Players just can't win, can they... once they're put under the microscope. I'm glad he works on his game. I'm glad he has a good attitude towards coaching. I'm glad he isn't a thug and represents himself and his team well.
There is a problem with some fans, namely the ones that care more about one player. It's sad when somebody wants one of the best players on the team to go somewhere else.
100% agree. I am American of European descent and not well versed in Chinese culture. A powerful oncourt presence and a gentle offcourt presence seems to have a Yin-Yang relationship...a good and/or natural concept in Chinese culture but alien to American culture. Perhaps a multi-cultural person can verify this for us?
Yao is not close to being on of the best Rockets? This is a joke, right? One of the top 3 or 4 Centers in the NBA, a guranteed All Star (the coaches would pick him even if the Chinese voting were banned), a player in the top 25 in efficiency rating for the entire league, among the league leaders in double-doubles? I'll admit that Yao is not (yet) Shaq or Duncan or Garnett...but not one of the best Rockets? You are welcome to your opinion however radical it may be, but there are two untradeable Rockets...and Yao is one of them.
After reading the Chinese version of Yao's BBS message, I cannot feel better. The NBA would have been much better with more players like Yao. First of all, he was not talking about basketball. He felt a little-bit home sick after watching a TV program. What's wrong with that, guys, for a geuine human being away from his home culture for so long? Secondly, the person has been playing well, if not dominant on court, and expressed his mind explicitly to his fans. What's wrong with that? Do you prefer instead someone else taking the weeds and pretending he is the hero of the world? Would that provide a good model for his young followers? As Gater said, this is a typically best part of the Chinese culture Yin-Yang that holds China together for the last five thousand years. And Yao wrote it in a very classy way, as fluid and emotional as a poet. I had that feeling before when I read his prevoious messages. And getting that feeling stronger and stronger ater each reading. Honestly speaking, Yao is a rare product with positive influence to the league and the next generation. You don't see many sport stars like that even in China. A very unselfish, well-educated, real, honest MAN. A MAN is not necessarily Shaq or Kobe like, that could be too violent off the court. Many would rather have a MAN like Duncan or Yao in the world. WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE THE LUXURY OF WATCHING THESE GREAT PERSONALITY IN NBA.
Right on. It's perfectly normal for people that experienced multiple culture to show opposite characters in different settings. You can be a genuine human being expressed yourself freely and open up to your fans on line with mellow verse, and you can learn to be aggressive and throw down ferocious dunk over Big Ben. Even the people grow up in just one culture can show different characters in different settings. For example, Desmond Mason he can be a high-flying dunker, privately he's a painter that shows a lot of artistic talents.
Those quotes are being read into way too much. The problem is that most americans can't understand Yao's feeling for home. They would much rather invade another's person home instead, then feel empathy for them.
You're so blinded by your love for Yao that you would construe any comment as positive. You've become completely irrational. Yao sounds like a sissy, not like a dominant player.
I'm not american. I live in the land of sissy's, so i know one when i see one. Yao is one ! Get over it
I think that the Yao's post was very well written. He may have an ability to write a book. That would be great.
Oh yeah, that would be great, forget what he's really for, which is win BASKETBALL games for the Rockets !
