But saying "This deal transcends all of baseball" implies to me that there is a deal. If everything goes back to the way it was then it doesn't transcend all of baseball and isn't a deal.
But several people on SoSH pointed out that the union twerp, Orza, had used "transcends or transcendent" in describing how far off Boston was on this new contract for ARod. Their point is that Henry was mocking the union and essentially saying that, they, the players' union, killed this deal. I guess we will find out for sure in less than 24 hours.
But saying "This deal transcends all of baseball" implies to me that there is a deal. If everything goes back to the way it was then it doesn't transcend all of baseball and isn't a deal. Henry didn't actually use the word "deal". From CBS Sportsline: <I>If Selig approves the restructuring and the union files a grievance to block it, the case would go to Shyam Das, baseball's arbitrator. There was a posting on a Red Sox fan website saying, "<B>It's an astonishing ending isn't it? Astonishing. In fact, it transcends baseball.</B>" The posting on the "Sons of Sam Horn" site was by "JohnWHenry," which club owner John Henry has previously acknowledged is his screen name. Henry did not immediately return an e-mail seeking elaboration. </I>
I didn't scroll through and read the post, I just commented on what was here. Sorry that it wasn't entirely correct. Actually, Orza said the principles involved are transcendent ones, meaning that the restructuring would not only affect A-Rod, but every other player in baseball, as well.... at least from Orza's point of view. But Orza didn't claim that it transcended baseball. I guess only Henry thinks that. Personally, as a guy who lives in the Metroplex, I think the Rangers are better off with A-Rod than without, so in that sense, I hope the deal is dead. Though knowing that it would be just one more John Hart misstep if the trade went through, I was kind of rooting for that. So, I guess either way, it's okay with me. But it seems to me that if the deal is dead, why not just say so? If talks are ongoing, then go ahead and be cryptic. But if it's over, then what harm is there in saying it's over?
Yeah, because who wants media attention during the offseason? Who wants baseball talk to be on everyone's mind now? This is football season, and the Commish doesn't want to detract from football by getting baseball a lot of press. But hey, this gives John Henry and Tom Hicks an out. They can say "Hey, we were minutes away from finalizing a deal when the Commish came in and said the deadline had passed and that A-Rod, unlike every other player in baseball, cannot be traded."
well Nomar was getting married, so I guess he shouldn't have. Johnny Damon though... they interviewed him and he was like..."well I gotta watch my off the field image, cuz the season's only so long" or something to that effect. I was like... too bad you're a ****ty player.
Anyway I still think the deal will get done, because of the contingent trade for Magglio is just awesome. It's so lucky that the white sox are willing to do that. Also, I think Boston management almost feels like they owe it to us the fans.
ESPN says the deal is dead now. But there was some progress made today as the Rangers agreed to lower their demand for cash back on Manny's contract. So, I don't know what the cryptic post meant yesterday as talks were obviously still on-going then.
Where are you getting this Magglio information, and can you please not ride his jock as much. Thanks.
it's EVERYWHERE, go on the ESPN website. if the ARod deal comes through they will definitely do this trade as well. As a Red Sox fan I just think it's great because this replaces manny's production in left field as well as any trade can. It's so much better than what people originally thought would occur, which is a untility guy. there is NOT ONE management in the league that won't take ARod + Magglio over Manny + Nomar. Too bad the whole trade is on hold now... dammit I really want it to happen.
After getting the chance to look at some things and reflect on this situation, here is what I think about it: 1) Manny Ramirez does not care (at least I don't think he does) where he plays in 2004 although he has said repeatedly that he wants to play in Boston. He will still hit 30+ homers, drive in over 100+ runs, and bat over .300. 2) Nomar Garciaparra will still play as hard as he ever plays and may play even harder as he feels that he has something to prove. 3) The Rangers are clearly the biggest losers in this as ARod's contract will continue to hamstring their efforts to get any good pitching and ARod will continue to rue the day that he decided to sign that ridiculous contract. 4) I think that dumbass Hicks will finally get the message and drop this idiotic demand that Boston gives him $5 million a year (at first he wanted 5 million a year for FIVE years but supposedly dropped it down to 5 million a year for three years). The guy is already saving 87 million; for him to want Boston to give him money is inane and ridiculous. If he truly wants to move ARod, he will concede. He is the one that needs to make this deal more than Boston does. The only bad thing is that the Sox are probably screwed in resigning Nomar but at least they get one more good season out of them. They could still trade Nomar for prospects, but of course, who would they get to replace him? Also, Kevin Millar has some 'splaining to do.
The Rangers couldn't attract free agent pitching before A-Rod. Not to mention that the Rangers apparently can't develop pitching. Their pitching problems are considerably deeper than A-Rod. Not that they were going to seriously upgrade their pitching with $5 or $6 million anyway. Chan Ho Park's contract is a much bigger albatross.
I have been on the ESPN website. I have been on numerous sports related websites, and I watch a lot of Sportscenter and I have not seen or heard one mention of Magglio Ordonez as being involved in this deal. Can you provide me with a link to a credible source that indicates otherwise? It shouldn't be hard to find since it's "EVERYWHERE". Furthermore, I wouldn't go so far as to say that Magglio replaces Manny's production. Although I would do a Manny-Nomar/Arod-Magglio swap.
Nomar to White Sox for Ordonez was a done deal - it just required the ARod trade to go through for it to happen.. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/n...nt_id=620776&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb took me all of 2 secs to find this article on Google
