I've never owned a firearm in my life and probably never will. And I know that gun rights and restrictions are a hot topic of the moment....rightfully so.

But when respected people such as this start openly calling for the repeal of one of the amendments guaranteed in our Bill of Rights, I definitely stand up and take notice.

In before talking about those who want to outright repeal the 2nd amendment is called a strawman.

This should definitely get every gun owners attention -- President Trump has demonstrated his weakness on 2A by banning and restricting weapons with the slightest bit of pressure from the gun grabbers. Trump is the greatest threat to 2A we've seen in 200+ years -- now is the time to act -- the days of feeling secure that 2A wouldn't be abolished are over.

I'm not sure Democrats realize how much they are shooting themselves in the foot by getting on the "gun grab" bandwagon, it's probably the only thing they could do to save the midterms for the Republicans and potentially get Trump a 2nd term. If they backtrack and support civil liberties, they catch hell from their base who is staunchly anti-civil liberties these days and if they keep it up, they'll alienate the majority of the voting public.

You should be more concerned that you're an "unwitting" traitor.

I know a lot of Democrats that aren't on the gun grab as some right winger would like to think .The only ones that need to worry about losing in the midterms are the members of the good ole boy association . There are some on both sides that don't think banning guns are a good thing both just seem to want smart measures put in place.

I thought his essay was complete lunacy and did harm to those who seek pragmatic gun reform steps.

Almost wonder if the NRA paid him.

That is what makes it worse, there's absolutely no chance that the anti-civil liberties people could repeal the bill of rights, and even talking about the desire to do so alienates most people.

I consider myself a moderate when it comes to gun control, but the idea of someone so well known and respected floating this made me stand up and take notice...and I agree it hurts the gun control cause badly.

Im against these idiotic and pointless ban attempts and I think they are wrong.

However if there is a movement to repeal the 2nd Amendment and its done within the confines of the constitution, I can respect the decision. However its just not going to happen.

In the mean time, lets talk about effective means to reduce this problem.

The 2nd amendment is poorly written and needs to be replaced or updated. That much is obvious. Repealing it with no follow-up would be an enormous fail though.

Democrats need to understand that following this thread will lead to some painful elections. Governing is a trap. No piece of legislation (short of wars) has ever led to electoral popularity in modern times.

It may not be the wisest thing to spend political capital on this instead of going for healthcare, tax/budget reform, or something else that will have a more immediate impact with less electoral backlash.

The Second Amendment will not be repealed and I doubt a majority of Democrats would support a total ban. It does need to be a lot tougher to get a gun but a ban is lunacy with hundreds of millions of guns already in the country.

I do not understand this idiocy. The whole point of the 2A is for defensive purposes, not for recreational or traditional purposes. 2A is very clear on its purpose and its ambiguity was intentional, not poorly written.

If we are going to remove that purpose, we may as well repeal it altogether.
