Oh yeah, this is probably one of the best threads I've read in a few years. Nero's analysis hits it on the head. However, I'd like to add a couple of more thoughts.

I hear many comentators stating how the Rockets have offensive firepower in their big three: SF, Cat and Yao. Yet, SF and Yao are having extremely disappointing years so far. Steve's in the mother of all shooting slumps and Yao seems exhausted and generally confused most of the time. I mean, when the ball bounces right through your hands and you're unable to secure the rebound, there's a problem.

I also hear many compentators and so-called experts stating that the Rockets need to get the ball to Yao. The entire offense should run through Yao. Now, I have no problem, generally speaking, with this assertion or way of thinking. However, with the way he's playing, is now the time to be trying this approach. I mean, is it maybe a little too early in Yao's NBA career to be making him the centerpiece of the Rockets' offensive gameplan?

I mean, how many second year players can you think for which a team has ditched their entire offensive methodology and approach to date? To the detriment of the All-Star that was already on your roster? Maybe it's time to give Yao a breather, let him work his way into the NBA and use some other offensive sets.

Furthermore, I know JVG's approach is to limit the other team's possessions by slowing down the game, but what's wrong with running the break if you have numbers? Or can break the guy off that's guarding you? I don't know how many times I've seen SF slow it down when he's got one guy to beat for a clear path to the hoop. He can get past like 90% of the players in the Association, why not try?

This brings me to my last point....have you noticed how few foul shots the Rockets have taken in the past few games.? I think this contributs greatly to the relatively meager total points the Rockets have put up, per game. TAKE IT TO THE HOLE, FOR CHRIST'S SAKE. Steve and Cat have the ability to draw fouls with their sheer athletic ability. If the other team's mediocre defense isn't giving you enought to work with, take it to the hole and draw a foul. If SF and Cat quit b****ing at the refs so much, they might get a few more calls to go their way.

Anyway, that's my rare rant. How theraputic.

I paid close to $200 to get direcTV w/league pass. I have not been able to watch an entire game since the Clippers win around the end of November. I love the Rockets so much. I love sanity more, though.

    MadMax:

    Watch the Mavericks.

Sometimes I root for them, sometimes against them... but I always watch them.

That game in Boston tonight was fantastic.

I'm on the hook for the league pass - - plus, I split season tickets with a friend (drive from Austin to attend the games). Haven't watched an entire game on tv in a week - -, gave away my game tickets a couple of weeks ago - went to one game last week by myself (couldn't find anyone interested in using my other seat) - and am trying to justify the drive to Houston for Friday's game --

If you find yourself turning off the TV, find yourself another team. Then, find yourself not being a true fan of the ROX.

If you eat the SWEET ONES, you have to eat the SOUR ONES too, BANDWAGONER.

    Don't be silly.

His point is NOT that he's no longer a fan, it's that there are multiple reasons why the passion within him is dying. I think a lot of people relate.

If you're always happy with the Rockets, especially this season, that must mean you're only watching the championship reruns on NBATV.

That's funny that out of everything that he said in his good analysis you have to pick out the guards and bash them again. Get a life

OK, MF (hopefully that's not what I think it means), I didn't say HE's no longer a fan... and quit the insults. What he's saying is that he turns off the TV. MF's (both you and him), watch the whole game... as painful as it may be, the ROX are still your team, and just because the season looks bad, you can't just walk away...

Go watch other teams' games and don't buy any ROX stuff and don't come here just to whine... all you're doing is venting... i watch them no matter if it is the lakers or the bulls against the ROX...

Rocket104, i don't have NBA TV nor ESPN, so I am only watching ROCKETS' GAMES. And I will keep on watching. Let all the other whiners cry. I never cry like they do.

Make a reply to what was said. and what the Topic is. What are you, the new reply critic. The implications are there. I didn't bash the guards anyhow. Comprehension is a good thing. Try again.

It is funny to read this thread. I was supposed that I am only one to reluctant to watching ROX game. Many times, I just like to watch one or two QT game. I really have no patience to keep watching game to the end. Yes I even hate my TV and want to destroy my TV. Fortunately, my TV is very nice to me and never say I hate you too.

When ROX come up early and play big time at the 1st QT, I am very depressed to see that ROX suck at the 2nd QT. Many guys complain about individual player. But ROX's problem is not individual player's inconsistence, but team trouble.

ROX need a good starting PF with D and OFF ability. A good backup PG is also needed.

In many cases that CATO, JJ and Moo are in the court at the same time, ROX would freeze its scorings. JVG likes defense more than offense. But his one-on-one defense is not enough to win many games. JVG did not find a right way to win a zone-defense team.

Well we have a world of problems and we have a little time to fix them so lets state the problems and answers.

    1. The Offense is horrible...The answer is that we move to ball quicker to make sure that everyone gets the shots they're accustomed to getting, including Yao getting post position... What the hec is Ewing doing.

    2. The Defense is good, but the other team gets good shots...The answer is that we pressure the passer to discourage the entry passer and in doing this we wont have to doulbe team or sag off in the passing lane. Too many times the other team gets the ball into the post too easy and too quick.

    3. Coaching...As of now I really havent seen too many bennifits of having JVG as head coach. I just see a little defense and a lot less scoring for us and the opponent. Sometimes I've had to ask myself why we made Rudy step down because we still dont have a fast breaking, up-tempo squad.

While I understand the basic idea behind your thread, Nero, and do agree with most of it, I have to disagree on the Cato bit. Few teams have 5 valid offensive weapons in their starting lineup. Cato is not so limited as people seem to think. True, when given the ball in the post he seems to do stupid things with it, but that is rare that he even gets that opportunity. For the most part, he hustles on the boards, plays good defense and converts the few offensive opportunities he gets.

And as for defense, if you watch closely, when Yao and Cato are both in the game, it is rare that Cato's man doubles on Yao. Why? Because then Cato would just flash to the basket, get the pass from Yao (who is always watching and finds it rather easy to pass over the top of all the smaller opponents) for the easy dunk. No, when there is a double on Yao, it is usually from a perimeter player on the weak side, so that the open man is the farthest away from Yao in case he passes out. Or, at least that has been my view of it. I like the hustle Cato brings to our team, and I like the offensive spark MoTay brings off the bench. I say leave the PF position alone.

Man this is like being at a funeral. In loving memory of the Rockets that we once knew... I'm sorry the organization wasn't able to find you a heart. It's like the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz, hell make that the whole cast of characters. The team has no heart, no courage and no brain. I would explain, but you all have seen how painful it is to watch them play. :( :( :(

RL: I agree, except what if we START the game with MoT to get things going offensively and still bring Cato in for the same minutes, or if MoT seems off right away?

I look forward to the Mavs playing instead of the Rockets. I have been a Rocket fan since 82. The Mavs play a more exciting game at this time.

The new offence system makes every player look bad except Cato. We have almost the same players as last year, but our offence is so bad. Stop use Cato as 4, just try something differently, also play Yao with less min.

Steve & Cat are a cancer to any winning team. I've said it for years, and year after year they support my argument.

They are hard headed, ignorant, selfish, immature spoiled brats...with atheleticism.
