…to the Grizzlies? As I understand it, you owe us your 1st round pick, either this year or next year. This year, it looks like a late lottery pick. Next year, with Dream gone, unless you get Webber, it looks like you could finish lower, and have to give us a higher pick. What do you think the Rockets will do?

My my, wouldn't you want that pick this year!! In what might be one of the deepest drafts in over a decade.

Don't come and use scare tactics. The Rockets have won without Hakeem all througout. They've only gotten better with time.

The Rockets will find themselves in the playoffs next year. So don't keep you hopes up that the Rockets will be giving up that pick.

Yeah, even if the Rockets don't get CWebb, he likely won't be staying in Sac town, so that is one playoff team that will be out next year. Gary Payton will probably be traded, so the Sonics won't have much of a chance, I figure, and the Jazz will have one more year on Stockton and Malone (if they don't retire)... there is a very good chance that we will make the playoffs next year, so I wouldn't be worried about it...

And this doesn't even take into account the fact that the Rockets will be better next year.

Or that the Lakers and Blazers are likely to self-destruct before the start of next season.

So the consensus is next year, is it? BTW, realgm and d******d Versace, when he was still talking to us, say that if the Rockets make the playoffs, we automatically get your pick this year.

So I'm cheerin' for ya. Go Rockets!

Wow, so I guess the only teams left will be the Spurs, Mavs, Rockets, and Suns?

Actually, as much as I'd rather not give the pick up, I believe the pick has to be Top-15 next year (is that correct, JuanValdez?), if we don't give it up this year. Personally, making the playoffs is more important to me (as I feel it should for most Rockets fans) but I'd rather make the playoffs and give up a pick this year around 17 or even 19, than be forced to give up a Top-15 pick next year. I don't believe we'll be picking Top-15 next year regardless of whether or not we get Webber (unless we lose Mo too and acquire absolutely no one over the summer either through trade, draft, free agency, etc.) and it'll be a hassle to try to acquire a pick that range and painful not to get the chance to use it.

Jayz, you have to acquire one. Vancouver's in a situation like that this year. They owe Detroit a Top-18 pick this year, so they're desperately hoping the Rockets give them their pick so they don't have to give up their own.

No that's different. Vancouver HAS a top 18 pick, they just want a second one so they don't have to give up their own. If they can't obtain another, they give up what they have.

There is no guarantee that we could get a top-15 pick through trade next season. That would require another team willing to trade its pick. If we can't trade for one, what does Vancouver do? They can't take something we don't have.

Theres got be more than that. You cant just go around acquiring things whenever you want. If it was that easy, we should just try and acquire a top 10 pick this year...

Are you associated with realgm JV? It's a nice site, btw. The way I understand our draft situation is slightly different that what's being said here. I believe we have until next year to give our pick to Detroit, but that next year it's unprotected. This year we have the option of giving them a pick from 1-18.

PS - If you are from realgm JV, when are you getting your future picks section up?

What I would give to see Rasheed choke the life out of Scottie.

WEll, I guess maybe we can give Vancover our Milwaukee pick this year ? Is that possible ?

I don't like the idea of acquiring a top 15 pick. That would most likely cost us a solid player (let's say Shandon) and teams are likely to hold us hostage.

I am with JayZ. How can the deal be setup such that we have to give a top 15 pick next season? If we don't have a top 15 pick, and can't acquire one, what happens? A major fine or something? This doesn't make any sense.

Griz, I am from RGM and I'm co-in-charge of the draft pick stuff. We have one doc that is done and is getting proofed before we publish it; it should be up soon. It will kick the crap out of NBATalk's and everything else I've found out there on the subject.

As for Van, you have it right, if you don't give Det an acquired pick this year (Versace said he wasn't giving up their own this year), you'll have to give up your own pick next year -- when it can no longer be an acquired pick and is only top-5 protected.

As for Houston, I know it doesn't make sense for Houston to promise something it hasn't got. But, after doing a lot of research on draft stuff, I'm more inclined to believe it than I was previously. The unfortunate caveat is that we don't know everything about the deal on picks. These things get very complicated and they don't publish much information on them and generally play it close to the vest. So there may be and probably is a clause that deals with the eventuality that Houston cannot acquire a top-15 in '02 or '03. It probably will not be good for Houston.

As for why I think it is top-15, here's one source (it's been collaborated): http://www.vancouversun.com/grizzlies/stories/010109/5070192.html

    And the pertinent text:

The Rockets owe the Grizzlies a first-rounder as part of the 10-player Steve Francis-Michael Dickerson deal in August, 1999.

If Houston makes the playoffs - they're 11th in the West now, four games out of the eighth and final spot - they have to turn that pick over to Vancouver or give the Grizzlies an acquired top 15 pick or a pick within two of Houston's slot....

If Houston doesn't make the playoffs, the Rockets have the option of conveying a top 15 pick to Vancouver in 2002 or 2003.

I suppose it is possible for the Rockets to opt to send the pick to Vancouver even though it is protected. That would save them from getting a hold of a top-15 later.

Relativist, as far as I know, that's right. It'll have to be top-15 next year.

Grizzled, I have to go with the consensus here: next year, we'll be in the playoffs, with or without Olajuwon (probably with) and with or without Webber (hopefully with). However, I desperately want to make the playoffs to have the privilege of giving the pick to Vancouver so that they can have the privilege of giving it to Detroit. Even though the Rockets will be better next season, the net is tightening on the draft debt and the sooner we pay it the better off we'll be. I hope for your draft's sake and ours that we do make the playoffs and give you the pick.

How can you say a pick has to be top something.

I mean, if the Rockets have no top-15 pick next year, then how are they going to give one away?

Great info! Thanks JV! I look forward to seeing the future picks information. I can appreciate that compiling that was no easy task. To say some that of these deals are obscure and convoluted is an understatement to be sure.

I'm with you on the pick. I hope Houston makes the playoffs and gives us the pick so we can give it to Detroit. If Detroit want to be nice, they could give it to you, ( [IMG] is everybody confused yet?) but I don't think they have to give you one this high.

It's funny, because earlier I felt a little torn between making the playoffs and holding on to our pick in a deep draft. I felt that not to having to lose our pick would be some consolation for missing the playoffs. Now I want to give up the pick this year, because next year the pick will likely be more costly. It makes missing the playoffs doubly painful.
