I'm starting my New Years resolution of checking out more bands that I've never heard of a little early this year. I was watching some show on MTV Sunday night (don't laugh, I was bored) called Advance Warning or something like that. I think it's the closest thing they have to the old 120 Minutes that I used to love. Anyway, they had an interview with some dorky looking guys with a weird band name. Death Cab For Cutie. I rolled my eyes and lamented how lukewarm the music scene has become lately. Then they played a video from them called The New Year. Holy shnikies, I was blown away! So I downloaded their album Transatlanticism Monday night, listened at work on Tuesday, and bought the CD on Wednesday. Now I can't stop listening to it. 11 well crafted well produced songs that I can't get enough of. There's a song called Passenger Seat that I just put on repeat for about an hour at at time. Great album, I'll have to get more of their stuff. Apparently, they have 3 other albums. So what's the last semi-obsure band you "discovered"?
Yeah, definitely. In SF, I discovered: Sean Hayes -- excellent, quirky singer/songwriter with lots of bluegrass and folk roots. I'm just amazed this guy isn't a bigger phenom yet. Little Fuzzy -- These guys are like Prince meets Stereolab. Unbelievable harmonized funk rock. Also, dressed like big Xmas trees at their last show, but still sounded amazing. The Frisky Frolics Depression era proto-swing/Vaudeville with period costumes. Surreal and incredibly talented, perfect for the post-dot-com economy in San Francisco.
Death Cab has some really nice stuff on Transatlanticism... Speaking of period costumes, check out British Sea Power. Old British WWI naval outfits, stuffed birds, camo on stage... wierd. The guitar stuff makes me think of old Echo. Interesting...
Not a new group, but thanks to WinMX I discovered the wonderful world of concert bootlegs last night. Hey, "if I haven't heard it, it's new to me."
Don't know if it is much of a discovery or not since I live so deep in a cave that I really hardly ever hear any new music at all. But, a friend gave me a couple albums by Jack Johnson which sound great. Sounds a bit like Ben Harper, but more mellow and has a strong reggae influence.
Well they're not a new band, and they broke up a few years ago. But Plexi is an awesome group that you should really check out. Their cd is tough to find, but it is possible. Go here to read some reviews and listen to some clips. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...f=sr_1_1/002-9767357-9603216?v=glance&s=music
I like the band DISPATCH...but given my wonderful timing - found out about them one month AFTER they broke up
buckethead is a freak on the guitar man saw him when he was playing with Guns-N-Roses New Year's Eve @ the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas in 2001. AWSOME show
Checked out your link and gave a listen to 5 songs from "Alabama Chicken" and he sounds a lot like a band I used to love way back, Timbuk-3. Ever here of them? Here's a link where you can listen to a few of their songs: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000000QGG/102-7569624-5042500?v=glance
Anybody who wears an empty KFC bucket on his head is a freak...regardless of whether they play the guitar or play the skin flute.
There are no obscure bands that I have been listening to or want to listen to but I have "discovered" an old classic band. That band is Blondie and the album is "Parallel Lines". I can honestly say that is one album that gets better and better after each listen.
so true RocketMan Tex I kinda meant it in the sense that he is an amazing player. but yeah the traditional meaning also applies also. He put on a num-chuck (sp?) performance during the show that was pretty crazy as well.
ima_drummer2k: Detah Cab does indded have 3 other albums, and Ben (their vocalist/guitarist) has a side project called The Postal Service that is fairly popular in indie circles. Kind of Human League-ish new wavey glitch pop with Ben's vocals. They have a LP and EP on Sub Pop. Ben also had a solo project years ago called All Time Quaterback that has a few records out if you;re into his songwriting. It's very lo-fo bedroom recording type stuff.
So, not only does this dude wear an empty KFC bucket on his head but he also wears a Michael Myers type mask, all the while he is playing his guitar. Alrighty then - I think we can safely say that RocketMan Tex's assertion that this dude is a major freakazoid is a valid one.
