Monroe will sign a one-year, $5M deal with Celtics, league sources tell ESPN. Pelicans could only offer $2.2M. New Orleans offered Monroe the chance to be the starting center, but Monroe will join the Celtics with fewer assurances on playing time.
Solid pick up for the Celtics. It honestly feels as though there are plenty of obstacles in the East for the Cavaliers and LeBron to watch out for. I wonder if they'll make a play for Tyreke Evans as well.
Probably the best choice for him regarding opportunity to win plus money (5mill) I am personally not that high on his fit with us would’ve been
Seems like he could have set himself up better for next season by being the starting C with the Pels.
I think an extended playoff run against slower paced Eastern conference teams would earn him more money. He could get to the Finals with Boston, he might not even be able to take the floor for the Pelicans against Golden State. Plus, Boston needs his offense off the bench, he'll likely be featured to some extent.
Houston's center position needs to be effective at pnr's. Which Monroe is not. There wasn't likely much interest there
He is very effective in post and a mediocre rebounder, defender. Those are his only bright spots. He can't run to save his life. Since our offense is based on running, he would struggle here mightily. He might me best fit for Miami, who plays at slowest pace in the league.
Very true and if he doesn't measure up, he won't get much floor time. However, as someone pointed out, his offensive skills against second units should help them a lot.
No, but he doesn't get $5M. Most of it comes off his buyout from PHO. I don't remember the exact breakout but it is usually why buyout candidates take the minimum. There is a certain point where the level is high enough that it makes sense to earn more.
All you guys that keep talking about his bad defense are just flashing the bat signal for @malakas lol. She spent a lot of energy defending Monroe.
Maybe as part of the buyout they agreed to let him double dip. Otherwise you figure he would go to the team that gave him most playing time.
Its actually offset language set by the CBA that applies to stretch provision and buyouts. Bima described it before for Josh Smith when he was stretched by the Pistons. There was also an Eric Pincus article. The player is able to double dip but the penalty gets progressively worse with more money. Since it is a buyout they could waive the set off provision.
