Not wasting any time filling the hole left by Pettitte signing with the Astros. Yanks Acquire Brown http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...2,0,1516748.story?coll=ny-homepage-right-area By Jon Heyman Staff Writer December 11, 2003, 4:21 PM EST Hours after Andy Pettitte signed with the Houston Astros, the Yankees acquired pitcher Kevin Brown from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade for pitcher Jeff Weaver and two minor league prospects. The completion the trade depends on all players involved passing physical exams The Yankees will also send $3 million to the Dodgers to compensate for Weaver's salary. Brown will make $15 million in 2003 and 2004. Weaver is set to make $6.25 million in 2003 and $9.25 million in 2004. The Yankees will pay $1.5 million each year to the Dodgers for the term of Weaver's contract. Brown, who has a no trade clause, has expressed interest in playing for New York and has said he would approve a trade to the Yankees.
Kevin Brown is broke down more often than a Pinto. I would have been pissed to get him. I think there are better pitchers out there that they could have gone after. Not that I care, I hope the Yankees get their asses handed to them all year.
Pretty good trade off...They would have paid more money over three years for Pettite. Trades like this usually don't happen in the span of a day, though, so something tells me that Pettite made up his mind about where to pitch a while ago...
Brown - 39 years old, has been out hurt more than he's pitched the last 3 years I wouldn't be surprised if Yankees fail to make the playoffs I think Toronto and Boston both have better talent just in their own division. Booo the evil empire
Boston has outdone the Yanks in every way this offseason. If the Red Sox pull of the A-Rod trade, then the Yanks are gonna be up **** creek.
Losing Pettitte will hurt the MFYankees more than they realize, but Brown isn't some spare part either. When he's healthy (and he was pretty healthy last year), he's one of the top 10 pitchers in the game. It's a gamble, but what did they give up? Weaver? He's sucked since he set foot in Yankee Stadium. Good move for them. This could portend a move for the Sox, too -- With Weaver in town, the Dodgers may be more likely to move Perez to Boston in a deal for Nomah. Should be fun to see this play out.
George released a statement thanking Pettitte for all he has done for the Yankees. At the end of the statement he says, "For those fans that are counting the Yankees out, don't bet the house on it."
The Sons of Sam Horn which is the premier Red Sox BBS have been talking about this for awhile and they all think that the Dodgers got screwed. However, none of them think that Weaver can turn his career around. The latest is that the Sox may not get A-Rod but have to deal Nomar since he (and his agent) are pissed at Red Sox mgmt for wanting A-Rod (behind his back is their claim). Gammons said that he would probably get dealt to LA for prospects and that the Sox would then try to sign Tejada to play SS. But I think that is Gammons talking out of his ass again.
Today, I was thinking that getting Tejada for nothing was the best route to go, while trading Nomar for much needed prospects. It'd be great to steal Tejada from Billy Beane, after Beane blew off Boston.
If the Sox "pull off" the A-Rod trade, they will have just handed the season to the Yankees again. Manny + Nomar for Arod is a raping no matter where the players end up. The fact is that Manny is the best offensive player in the game, and Arod over Nomar is a marginal improvement at best. If they somehow get a LF out of the trade for Nomar, then maybe it will be justified. But that's a big maybe.
Sure, if only he could keep from injuring his [pick one: back, elbow, knee, fingernail, wrist, receeding hairline, fouth metacarpal, earlobe, etc...]. He's about as far from a sure thing as you can get.
Great, just great! What Yankee fans cares they lost Pettite, they just got Kevin F'n Brown. They're probably better off now.
