I was laid in March of 2001, and didn't get a 'permanent' job again until November of 2002.

If it makes you feel any better.. during those 1 3/4 years i was unemployed, I found enough temporary/contract work to the point that I made more money during that time than any other year of employment by a company.

Unfortunately, supporting a family, house, and paying our own insurance increased my expenses dramatically.

My point is: you lost your job, but if you work hard, you can still find work and bring in money.

STAY POSITIVE! I'm a somewhat pessimistic guy, and being miserable when getting laid off is hard to avoid, but keeping your attitude positive helps you, helps your family (if you have any), and makes you look better in interviews.

Damn, Drew, I'm sorry to hear it. Please email me to let me know what it is you do. Perhaps I can help, but it would mean moving back to H-town, which, like RM95 said, ain't all that bad. Especially when you compare it to Los Angeles!!!!! :D

    Drewdog,

Sorry to hear about your job.

And if that's your worst day ever, consider yourself lucky. You'll get another job. The wallet was only an annoyance. The kid is safe, and you may drive safer now.

Wish you luck on the job search. I hear (yep, here in Austin) that people are starting to get a decent number of interviews now, so it may not be like your last job search experience.

Wow Thanks for all of the great support guys.

I really did not see this coming, and I think I just need a few days to clear my head. Not drinking is going to be hard, but I think something good will come out of this. I just despise the interview process.

I have no qualms about moving back to Houston or staying here in Austin. I can be happy in either city. Hell, Id even move to Dallas (even though Im not a big fan of the city) if the right job popped up.

For what its worth, I have 4 1/2 years of inside/outside sales and account management experience. Ive kind of thought about doing my own thing for a while now, maybe its time to explore that avenue. Im definitely looking to do something in sales though.

Time to get my resume together......

Sorry to hear that, Drew. Did they give you any warning at all? Any rumors? I b**** about my job a lot but I guess I'm pretty lucky to have one after reading this.

If you want, email me through the site and I can give you my HR person's email address. AIG (in Houston) is always looking for good sales people.

Good Luck to you Drew. I was recently unemployed my damn self. I left a solid job I had but hated. To go start my own company with a friend of mine and we had a good contract to start with. Then the company backed out of the deal leaving me jobless. I really got down about it becuase I didnt want to go back to my old job I had the pay sucked and I was way overworked. Plus I have a pretty bad criminal background that has screwed me out of several opprotunites. I mean I'm still suffering for something I did 10 years ago. But anyway, I started getting depressed drinking and stuff. But then all of a sudden when I got to the point of having to swallow my pride and go back to my old job the company that backed out of the contract hired me. So, all I'm saying is that you never know how things will turn out. Keep your head up and be thankfull you have your health and you do have skills to get another job. Take care.

You will have to study a handbook and pass a state-authorized test. There are also prep classes you can take.

I used to have one before music took over my life and I moved to Los Angeles when I was 24.

I just feel that if someone is going to be a salesperson, why not sell what will make you the highest commissions and most $$$. Just my opinion.

Start writing a book about a guy who gets laid off, slams into a kid with his car by accident and kills him, and then discovers that the very boy he hit was the child of a mob boss. After running for his life he eventually learns that the mob boss was his former employer. And the games begin.
