I just like it, i have a big trust in MDA that he knows what hes doing. But here are some of the things that I personally guess hes trying to do with the tight rotation. Let me elaborate Famous french economist Frederic Bastiat wrote an awesome treatise That which is seen and that which is not seen (It's a great read for expanding your mind and the mind expanded beyond its limits can never stretch back.) Now, we all know what are some of the downsides of shortened rotation but what about some hidden benefits. Players having their most efficient season ever: James Harden Chris Paul Trevor Ariza Ryan Anderson P.J. Tucker Clint Capela Nene Players having their second most efficient season ever Eric Gordon Luc Mbah a Moute Now, one of the reasons all these players have great seasons is 1. they are promised stable PT and specific role, and they are paying back to mda in advance for this trust by having great seasons and 2. by tightening rotation you create a) a more compact players family who are better used to each other, b) have better feel for each others game and tendencies c) have more play/practice under the belt d) you motivate players to play better because they have clear cut goals(in practice or ingame) to achieve in order to break into rotation or avoid being cut out of rotation. I hope you now feel more at home with what MDA is doing, or maybe youll find it easier to find some other reasons to trust mda or perhaps you should pm morey that his rotation and minutes distribution are not good.
He has been doing the short rotation forever. What's different this year? Maybe having MVP caliber PG on the court at all time.
Last month, Eddie Johnson(Long-time Suns announcer) said D'antoni doesn't really practice his guys hard at all. This allows him to give them the minutes he wants. Heard this on Sirius xm radio.
Well reasoned and argued. I overall don’t mind the rotations too much. When everyone is healthy we have a 9.5 man rotation. Everyone in the top 8 deserves quality “starter” type minutes because of how good they are and how well they are playing. The last 1.5 are also where I feel good about. Nene needs his rest and black signed up knowing exactly his role of backup backup Big. My only problem is during blowouts he waits too long to bench guys or even rides them until the end unnecessarily. I understand in the new nba a 15 point deficit is very capable to overcome and that we have one of the worst end of bench units. But you can pull harden ariza cp3 and capela at 4-5 minutes rather then 1-2.
Agree, @hakeem94 . imo, a lot of this is about developing chemistry with a bunch of new legit rotation guys playing together for the first time, plus rolling out more of the playbook (as players from last year are more comfortable to add wrinkles, namely Harden/Capela), and specifically seeing what works best with Paul. Developing our rotation chemistry and system is what MDA is doing, imo. That's the most important thing. Or at least, that's the advantage of being "tight." And call me crazy, but I also like to point out that all our other players were either undrafted or 2nd round picks in their rookie or 2nd year. 9.5 right? Gordon Luc Tucker Nene/Black platooning as backup Center.
I don’t really have a problem with our rotation or the minutes that guys are playing for the most part the only issue I have lately is that Ariza has played over 40 minutes in 3 straight games and over 38 in 4 of the last 5...I know that Moute has been out, but that’s still too much for Ariza IMO other than that, Harden is at a career low in mpg as a Houston Rocket and Chris Paul is tied for the lowest mpg of his entire career I hope that Morey can get a useful vet or 2 via buyout that D’antoni can trust so he’ll be able to get the guys out quicker during blowouts because Mike doesn’t trust these scrubs unless we’re up big with a minute or 2 left
I just wish he would take out Harden and CP3 for the last few minutes when we’re up 20. Harden and CP3 would be even more efficient on paper if it weren’t for those garbage time bricks
yeah, I’d love to see Ariza in a routine of 30-32 minutes every night...last thing we need is his shooting tanking near the end of the season and his defense slipping because he’s been overexerted I think we could get Harden down to around 34 mpg and CP3 to around 30 mpg once we get better end of bench players to lower their garbage time minutes...I also hope they try to give CP3 and Harden scheduled rest games during the 2nd half of the season, but that probably won’t happen if we’re battling GS for the 1 seed
Totally disagree! MDA is going to run guys into the ground during the regular season - as he has done his whole career! Certain guys minutes may be down overall... but thats compared to being totally overused the previous seasons... Keeping starters in during garbage time is unnecessary and just asking for injury or dead legs in the playoffs... heres Ariza's minutes over the last 3 games... 12/18 41 mins 12/16 42 mins 12/15 42 mins for a 32 year old guy... Thats just stupid and unnecessary!
Love MDA, but his hard headedness with a short rotation is a real weakness. Whatever positives you get from playing a short rotation isn't enough to overcome the negatives. Tired legs and injuries are part of the game in the grueling NBA regular season. That effectiveness is for nothing when you are too tire to defend, or when you get injuries and you haven't developed any quality bench players to step in.
That's weird because just this morning I was watching the PJ Tucker interview going into today's Lakers game and he said that they go harder in their practices than in live games.
