So i guess the question is...can you teach a person to be an explosive jumper?

He'd have to train those massive legs, his back and shoulders. Right now he's too heavy for his own strength.

I am not "aksing" him to be an explosive jumper but I'm just asking him not struggle to dunk, espicialy when he leaves his man behind and he get fouled from the back and he misses the dunk. He needs to dunk it with authority like he did on Theo Ratliff and he should get to the point where he can jump at tip off.

Yao Needs to Take a Hop

Hopefully, Ewing will teach Yao the patented step, hop, jump, technique which is probably the closest thing you get to a LEGAL travel. Yet centers get away with this. Right now, Yao comes to a pause after he makes his move. Add an extra hop, and he'll be able to create more space, cover more ground, and get to the hoop faster.

Iverson, is probably one of the best guards to use this (this his how he can change direction in the layup and elude big defenders). Among centers, look at Shaq as another example of using this hop step.

And that is the lesson for the day.

Everyone wants Yao to be agressive, jump higher, or rebound better. To me this would all be solved if he just made his move quicker. Think of Hakeem in the San Antonio serise in 95'. As soon as he got the pass he was makeing his move. Yao seems to get the pass and wait around like Barkley , alowing for the double team or weak side help to come over and block him. I realize that the rules have changed but i still feel that if he moved faster and made faster decisions with the ball (as well as the rest of the team) that he would have more space and be more effecent with the ball. Let's face it he's 7'6 he doesn't have to jump to get his shoot off, but if the defence knows where to be and when to be there .........

    I'm Convinced

After watching 60 minutes of Yao highlights, I am convinced he has yet to add the two foot hop to his arsenal. On drives, Yao tends to jump off one foot. But even here, he "stretches" more than he does explode to the hope. Based on his footage, it seems like he definitely has the ability to be a two foot jumper, albeit, a little less explosive. Rebounding is a classic case of this. For all of you who think Yao is lacksadaisical in getting those offensive and defensive rebounds, all you need to do is look at his vertical with two-foot jumps. If his positioning is poor, his jumping will not bail them out. The reverse is true for many of the league's premier PFs who can jump very well even if they're out of position.

If Ewing can teach Yao to take that one "hop" step, Yao will have much improved success, IMHO. Right now, Yao needs to get w/in the circle on the initial drive just to be in "dunking" range. But instead of driving to the circle, he can HOP and that should cover more ground for him. He definitely has the width and the girth to spin nicely around the defender. If he can add a hop, then we'd be seeing a lot more dunking action from ALL angles. And even if hte dunks aren't there, Yao can also go to the short hooks after those hop steps.

Interesting. Yes, Yao is probably accustom to just "stretching" over his opponents, rather having to learn how to explode upwards. He never had to do it in China.

It's a learned technique. Both the explosiveness and the positioning.

You will get a monster out of this. I know it because I created one in NBA Live 2003 by setting Yao's attributes to the max. I can play only him ISO all day and still beat every team by 50.

In the other thread, people talk about how Detroit is training Darko. Look at this:

Does anybody train Yao by the right way?

The HOP is a really good move for Yao to learn ... if the refs don't call him for travelling.

Shaq is unstoppable with his Hop but he actually travels most every time.

    The rules say:
    A) After you to dribble the ball, if you catch the ball with both feet off the floor, you can :
    1) Take 2 steps then shoot the ball.
    2) Land 1 foot then another, the 1st becomes your pivot foot and you can pivot on it, i.e. keep it on the floor and step with the other foot then release your shot.
    3) Land 1 foot, take a hop and land both feet at the same time. This time you have no pivot foot. You can jump and shoot but you can not step with either foot before you release the ball.

A lot of time, Shaq does step 3 put still pivot and get away with it.

    B) If you catch the ball with 1 foot on the floor, that foot becomes the pivot, you can not step and land with it again.

Shaq routinely catches the ball with 1 foot on the floor and still take another hop.

It's pathetic how the refs let him get away with it.
