First of all, there are a lot of frustrating things about the RS top 500 list.

But it's not entirely Rolling Stone's fault.

They picked over 50 people to put the list together ranging from musicians to record execs to critics to rock historians -- most of whom weren't affiliated with RS.

So you've got to blame some of those guys for leaving Rush off, too. ;)

Hmm, I went to their site and looked at all of their choices. I have 110 of their 500 albums!!

    Wow. I actually had 31.

And didn't pay for most of them because I'm such a naughty boy.

Perhaps they could've dropped a few of those greatest hits collections to make room for others.

Rolling Stone just doen't do prog rock.

My only disappointment with the 500 was the fact that they attempted to include jazz recordings in there. It is unfair to try and rank Benny Goodman or Duke Ellington or Miles Davis alongside the Beatles or Bruce Springsteen.

If the Clash can make #8, I would think Blue Trane or The Birth of Cool would rank up there as well.

Plus, there are some classical recordings that, arguably, are as influential and essential to modern music as anything on that list - Gershwin, Copland, etc. And, frankly, you could (and probably should) consider recordings by Tito Puente or Celia Cruz if you can include Bob Marley.

I don't have too many arguments with the top 50 or so and it is a pretty subjective list. I just feel they should've narrowed the criteria a bit.

It is perposterous. But whoever said RS was worth reading anyhow? Between its constant far-left editorial tilt and overhyping of lame music, I find it probably the most distateful music magazine around. Any mag that trashed Led Zep for as long as they did sucks the big one in my opinion. So I really didn't expect any panel they convened on the top 500 would put out any list of value.

I always liked reading the reviews in Rolling Stone. They still do great reviews although I often disagree with reviewers. But, if you know who you dislike, it's as good as reading someone you like because you just go buy whatever they think is horrible. :)

The main problem I've always had with RS is that the writers are encouraged to be part of the story - or, at the very least - write the story as if they are part of it. There's a lot of "When I entered the hotel room, there were discarded National Enquirer's littering the floor, a pair of plaid boxers hung on the lampshade and the pungent smell of cigarette smoke that seemed to be seeping out of the fibers in the polyester carpet. Through the murky haze of the cracked window curtains, the shadow of a shirtless (insert rock and roll singer name here) emerged and called to me, 'You got a light?' I flipped on the light switch to sift though my purse for a lighter and saw in big fire engine red letters on the door 'This is a Non-Smoking Room.'"

I dunno. Seems so pretentious to me. It sounds more like a 19-year-old creative writing student's diary than a feature story.

what's so funny about this particular list is how they flip flopped from their previous lists in '87 and '90. Their '87 list of the 100 greatest albums had the Sex Pistols Never Mind The Bollocks at #2 in this new list they were #41. And they left Elvis Costello's Get Happy completely off the list the F***ing Bastards!
It just goes to prove that music like beauty is in the eye or the ear of the beholder.

I guess that money I squandered in college studying journalism finally paid off. All it took was 10 years and a few thousand posts on a basketball bulletin board. :D

    Only 63 for me. I guess I'm a loser.

I can't complain that much when they have 4 albums from The Police. Greatest band ever.

And of course, chiming in at #297:
