That might be true before he blow out his knee. He was very slow, couldn't jump at all after he came to the league. Anyone who saw him playing during his peak? --daoshi
true. even Murph (the shortest Rocket ever) was credited with 51 blocks over his career. imagine the crap those players got who were blocked by calvin murphy?
I'll have to catch some of Ralph Sampson's old games on ESPN classic. I remember seeing him making some highlight real dunks from what I recall those weren't him skying over someone but putting a move on past the D and putting it in the hoop. I forgot about Artis Gilmore. Wasn't he another freak of nature? Supposedly the strongest man to ever play basketball. It would be a nice fantasy matchup to see Gilmore in his prime playing Shaq now. I like your analysis about quick leaping ability vs height and it seems like Yao is deficient in both.
"Jump! Jump! Daddy Ming'll make ya JUMP! JUMP!" Man oh man, those boys with the backwards pants were the best!
Most of the 6"6 players in the league should have at least 1 feet extra vertical than Yao. I am not suprised that Yao can be blocked by any sf in the league. AK is the fastest leaper in the the league, and last year he lead the block per minute. Most of time people under estimate how fast he can jump. If YAO has AK's leaping ability, he can block any shots within 5 feet. We should give Yao the credit for his aggressiveness this season, I have seen him lower his should and banged hard. It is not easy to send 280 LB Greg Ostertag flying several feet even though he might flop a little bit.
I couldn't agree more, if he gorilla dunks it. I would make me "f33lsogood". How embarrassing not to be able to jump during the tip-off.
Didn't you know that scouting report on Griffin was wrong??? You should have read the one that said things of this nature: 6'10", lazy, pot smoking, simi-athletic, PF that thinks he has the shooting ability of a SG, deeply rooted with emotional issues, etc....etc....etc....
seems like we got the peices but their not in one peice. If only Yao had steve's athleticism(he would be better than Jordon being a 7-6 guy with a 44 inch vert is hard to stop) or if steve had Yao's smartness....
hmm, maybe steve's vert is probably too much for yao, but it would be cool to see a guy 7-6 jump another 44 inches and just be on yop of the world.
The biggest knock on Yao is his reaction time. As long as he can jump faster, he should be able to grab tons of rebounds even though he can only jump 6"-10". Yao is already tall enough for the rim, he does not need to jump high. I am pretty sure 'Duncan does not have much leaping ability, but he jumps pretty fast. I don't understand why Yao jumps so slowly, does it have anything to do with his big muscle on his legs? He needs to jump FASTER! Right now, he is a way below average slow leaper.
Anybody knows how much Ben Wallace jumps? I am pretty sure he is not that athletic. He can't be super fast either as he is an undrafted player. How did he improve so much for his blocking and rebounding?
I am sick of seeing "pot smoking" used as a derogatory term. Enough already. Most of the NBA smokes pot, they just never get caught.
