Nothing is official as of yet. Hawaii is a rumor for now, but I'd be willing to bet that rumor is true.
Go Coogs... The 7-5 record is simply amazing considering what we've done the past couple of years... Kolb is a true freshman and is only going to get better...The talent will start coming as this system is on the rise... Kolb is the second best true-freshman QB in the nation behind Leek...
Someone posted this at thecougarweb.com.. Kolb gets honorable mention on the rivals all-freshman team (you have to scroll down quite a ways): http://www.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=240728 Leak (from Florida) being picked for the top freshman QB is a joke. Kolb deserves it. Lets look at the stat comparison, shall we? Leak 146 completions Kolb 169 completions Leak 1894 yards Kolb 2365 yards Leak 12 TD's Kolb 21 TD's Leak 10 ints Kolb 4 ints Leak 133.6 rating Kolb 151.0 rating Kolb - 7 rushing TD's Leak - 2 Kolb - 280 rushing yards Leak - negative 86 granted Leak has played a stronger schedule.. but Kevin's achievements are much better across the board.
Dave Maggard was just on 740 AM.. he said, among other things: assured by cusa that we will go to bowl no specific bowl to be announced yet work still going on cleared up within hours, or by tommorow morning disappointed we don't have it tied down yet it's going to be a big positive for us GMAC bowl still up in the air UH will be in a CUSA bowl Maggard won't state any preference for a bowl It will be one of two bowls
Now it's official: http://www.conferenceusa.com/sports/football/release.asp?RELEASE_ID=5962 Conference USA Announces Bowl Pairings Conference USA has completed its process for determining bowl participation for its five bowl-eligible football teams. Regular season champion Southern Miss will represent the league in the AXA Liberty Bowl on December 31 in Memphis and will face Mountain West Conference champion Utah. Louisville has accepted a bid to the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., on December 18, where it will face Mid-American Conference regular season champion Miami (Ohio). TCU will participate in the inaugural Fort Worth Bowl on December 23 against an opponent to be determined. Houston will play in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl on December 25, taking on Hawaii of the Western Athletic Conference. Memphis has accepted a bid to the New Orleans Bowl, where it will play Sun Belt Conference champion North Texas on December 16. On Saturday afternoon, following its 20-13 win over SMU, TCU was extended an invitation to the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala. The GMAC Bowl has the next selection among C-USA teams following the AXA Liberty Bowl. Late Sunday evening, TCU declined the GMAC Bowl’s invitation due to the conflict that the Dec. 18 game presents with TCU’s final exam schedules. “The Conference understands that TCU’s decision was based solely on its academic conflict and we support TCU’s right to make a decision that they believe is in the best interest of its student-athletes’ academic welfare,” said Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky. On Monday afternoon, Louisville accepted a bid to participate in the GMAC Bowl for the second consecutive season. “We appreciate very much the highly cooperative manner in which the GMAC Bowl worked with the conference office on this matter and we have the greatest respect for the bowl’s leadership and the people of Mobile,” added Banowsky. “They continue to be a great bowl partner with which we value our association.” Southern Miss will be making its third appearance in the AXA Liberty Bowl. USM defeated Pittsburgh, 41-7, in the 1997 game and downed Colorado State, 23-17, in the 1999 game. The Golden Eagles will face Mountain West Conference champion Utah in the contest. USM has played in a bowl game six times in the last seven years and has an all-time record of 6-7 in bowls. Louisville and TCU are among 16 Division I-A programs that will be making their sixth consecutive bowl appearance this season. After finishing with its highest win total since 1973, 8-4 Memphis will be playing in its first bowl game since 1971 when it kicks off the 2003-04 bowl season in New Orleans. Houston will be a part of its first bowl game since winning C-USA’s inaugural championship in 1996 when it faced Syracuse in the Liberty Bowl.
Conference USA doesn't have a tie-in bowl in Houston (the Houston Bowl is tied into the Big 12 and the SEC). Therefore, the chances of CUSA sending any team to the Houston Bowl is slim to none. Of course, with realignment appearing on the horizon, you never know what possibilities exist for UH to play in the Houston Bowl in the future.
UH v. UH is a dream come true for me, since my cousins and I attended the different UH's. Now I just need to figure out how to get to Honolulu. Not exactly a fan friendly road trip.
And you wonder what kind of damage TCU did. I mean they were a ranked team. No bowl can be happy about that. You wonder what kind of long term damage that could cause to conference USA. If any. I don't really follow what Conference USA has or has not done, but it seems to have legitimized itself for the most part. I'm glad we are part of it right now.
I thought that the Houston Bowl had tie ins with the Big XII, and SEC or at-large. What I am trying to say is that if all the SEC slots have been filled that were bowl eligible, couldn't they try to pull in an independent such as Notre Dame if they were to become eligible, or some other bowl eligible team that has its bowls filled already. If that makes any sense to anybody.
Damn the Hawaii Bowl is going to be a great opportunity for this young team. They are only going to get better and better. A freshman QB who threw for more than 2,500 yds and only 4 Int's, a sophomore running back who broke 1,000 yds, and three great young recievers that are really fast (Vincent Marshall, Bennie Swan, and I forgot the name but the other guy is redshirted this season, he was Vincent Youngs #1 wide reciever at Madison HS). Should be a fun game against Hawaii, GO COOGS!
Well sure, if either the Big XII or SEC doesn't have enough teams to fill their bowl tie-ins, the Bowl can (actually they would have to) go get a team not in that conference. That's actually what's happening with the Fort Worth Bowl. The Big XII doesn't have enough Bowl eligible teams to send a team to Fort Worth, especially if two Big XII teams go to BCS Bowls rather than just the champion.
Don't know who you're talking about with #1 receiver. That probably would have been Courtney Lewis. Swain's not supposed to be that good. Briles is doing a good job though, and if he can recruit talent in the Houston area well at all, you all could become okay.
If I'm not mistaken, Lewis was the RB at Madison, not WR. And Bennie Swan was a top 10 WR in the state last year.
Yeah, but I think he was the leading receiver. Maybe not. I don't know about Swain. He wasn't that highly regarded by what I heard, but hopefully he'll be a player for you all.
