I am moving to a new apartment in a few weeks and I'm trying to find a good, yet reasonably rate-charging, moving company.

The first estimate I got today was for over $1000. It's a 1 bedroom apartment, moderately furnished, and the move is only 7-10 miles.

That price is outrageous. I was used to paying between $300-$400 for moves in Austin.

If anyone has recommendations, I'd truly appreciate it.

Damn, do you get a free jar of KY jelly with that mover?

Moving a one bedroom apartment 7-10 miles has U-Haul written all over it.

Exactly. All movers will screw you in a move like that. Rent a UHaul, and hire day laborers if you need help.

I'm not interested in risking damage to my furniture or wasting an entire day with lifting, loading, unloading heavy furniture. I'm not all that muscular. ;)

I'd much rather use a professional who knows the most efficient way to move all of my stuff and does so in a proper manner.

Of course, I still plan to move all of my electronics on my own. I don't trust anyone with my computers / home theater equipment. Not even my mama. ;)

That is a very ridiculous price. Have you tried anyone else?

I've never paid over $250 for a move.

As someone who's moved 8 times in the past 6 years, I've dealt with several moving companies. My last three moves were done by Nite Hawk Moving Company. I refer everyone to them, and everyone has been pleased.

Ask for the mgr, Walter Kirby.
