If something is broke, eventually you have to try and fix it. I think the proposed deal makes the team better I don't think you can - what would be a realistic proposal that you would consider and fufill your criteria?
Neither team will take the trade. The Cavs have no inside presents after Z, so it makes no sense for them to trade their only inside player for small guys. The Rockets cannot play Z & Yao at the same time (too slow), so it means you pay Z the big money to put him on the bench. Plus, Davis is a poor man's Mobley. The botton line is that this doesn't address the Rockets' need, which is a good ball handler, who can distribute the ball, direct the offense. --daoshi
rockets need 1. defensive-minded players 2. outside shooters i like Andrei Kirilenko. can the rox ship mobley for him?
The team that I feel would probably make the most logical match for the Rockets is probably Milwaukee with Seattle coming in second. Milwaukee has three players that imo fit this team well in Michael Redd, TJ Ford and Joe Smith. I have no idea if you could acquire all 3 in some trade but imo Michael Redd would be an excellent perimeter complement to Yao. Seattle has players this team could definitely use in Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis and Brent Barry. My guess is they would never consider moving Lewis, but with the emergence of Ronald Murray, I see no reason why they would be opposed to moving Ray Allen esp if in return they can land a Steve Francis. I havent given extensive thought to this b/c imo the odds of Steve getting traded in season are slim to none, but those are the two teams I thought of off the top of my head. The point is, despite his flaws, Steve Francis is still considered one of the top 20 players in the NBA, and if he became available, there would be many better players to discuss than Ricky Davis.
I see the logic of trying and getting Allen for Steve but I think they probably would be looking to trade him for a PF if they don't want to keep him in the future.
Let's break it down, player-by-player: Francis / David -- Stevie for Stevie Lite? No thanks. Taylor/Ilgauskas -- This one's close, but we don't need height up front, we need bulk. Plus, ZI is just one more foot injurty away from retirement. Too risky. Norris/Ollie -- In a heartbeat!! Can we pull the trigger on just this part?!?
I still don't undestand why people think Francis is THAT much better of a ball player than Davis. I see the logic behind saying that they are similar so you aren't fixing anything, but look at the stats, freaking Ricky Davis dishes out the rock more than our PG does while grabbing just as many boards, scoring pretty much as many points, and shooting better, plus he's bigger - a legitimate small forward. Davis's off-court reputation isn't good, but if you actually watch him play...well, he's good.
Because Steve was an All-Star, and you can't start for the all-star team unless you really deserve it. Like I said, I think we could possibly get more for Steve (his marketing value should increase his market value) but this trade would almost certainly help the team.
JayZ, It is because you dont rate a player's value based on 16 games. Steve Francis has CAREER numbers of 20-6-6. Despite the flaws in his game, Steve is still a very valuable asset if you decide to put him on the trade market. Ricky Davis had 4 sub par seasons to begin his career followed by his fifth season where he piled up 20 PPG as being the only option on a TERRIBLE Cavs team. He shot a pathetic .410 from the field last season and jacked up almost 19 shots per game to get his 20 PPG. The guy is just not a proven commodity in this league. It is absolutely foolish imo to trade one of your key building blocks that you know will provide you certain output for someone that is still very much unproven in a true system. As much as some folks hate Steve Francis, I can guarantee you that if you trade him for some mediocre package this teams win total will drop like crazy. You had better get a consistent and established player in return or you just dont trade him. If Ricky Davis and Cuttino Mobley are your second and third options, be ready for a return trip to the lottery.
I am for trading Francis but not for a deal like this. Start with a stud playing any position but center, my favorite would a 4 who is great on D and the boards and at least adequate on O (Brand/J. Oneal). Then we play out this season as best we can (probably lose in 1st round of playoffs but hope to give the opponent some trouble) and look for a solid 1 with our MCE next offseason.
I mention it too much, but what the heck. I don't know that we could get a star player for Francis...not because other teams wouldn't jump in to grab him, but who(m?) would they offer in return, and would we need the player? If you could parlay Steve/Eddie Griffin for McDyess/NY 1st rounder, sending McDyess' expiring contract to Golden State for Nick Van Exel (I think GS wants to purge contracts, and NY certainly would love Steve, already having a glut of power forwards, and Dice's future so iffy), and if you send the 1st rounder to the Pacers for Jamaal Tinsley... Nick Van Exel and Tinsley for, basically, Steve and Eggie would be the sort of deal we should look for. But I still think that CD and Les see a lot of season ticket holders wearing Francis jerseys, and won't have the guts to make such a deal. And I don't blame their fear. Still, Steve and Cat are too much of the same knucklehead, and Steve is obviously feeling a little stifled playing in a system.
Rox, imo you arent getting enough in that type of a deal. If you are dealing with the Warriors you absolutely have to get Jason Richardson in that deal. If they are talking Jason Richardson/NVE for Francis then maybe there is something to possibly discuss. I see no reason for giving away Francis for what amounts to essentially two role players. Yao Ming is not good enough to carry 7 role players to a championship, and yes Cuttino is a role player despite what many of the Cuttino fans think. Remember even as great as Tim Duncan was, he could not carry the Spurs to the title after Sean Elliot's kidney ailment until they reloaded and Parker/Ginobilli improved.
If we can get Michael Redd and/or Tim Thomas and an slightly above average PG. ........then we're set =\ T.J Ford? I dont know enough about him besides the fact that he was a top10 pick.
Michael Redd and TJ Ford?? Are you people crazy? This is not addition by subtraction and why don't you take a look at their record IN THE EAST. The only plausible trades for Steve Francis would be (and these are situations in which the team may want a change also so no Duncan/Garnett/Lebron etc) : For Sure's: Tracy McGrady (if he wants out of Orlando but Back problems) Vince Carter ( same, but has had knee problems ) Kobe ( pending Rape trial) Maybee's: Marbury ( If the Suns want to switcharoo again like Kidd) Paul Pierce Andre Miller and change (Tskita or Nene) - might be a better fit Maggette and Q (rough start/ sterling would love Francis for mktg Jason Richardson/ Troy Murphy or Dunleavy - If better fits Nash & change : True Point Guard
Sorry! More Maybee's: Ray Allen and (Radmonovic or Barry) Baron Davis ( Injured last few years ) Elton Brand and Jarik (clippers)
