i think we can all agree on this: yuli doesn't appear to be a racist, nor did he have malicious intent. however, he did make a racial slur (casual racism/harmless joke - call it what you must) and it was a mistake at that, especially with everything that is going on in society (you can argue a cultural barrier but i don't believe that absolves him from criticism). that cannot be debated. there is definitely some faux outrage by both sides on the issue, and it is a distraction to our team in the midst of being 2 games away from winning. he should be fined, and not suspended (there's more of a case of suspension if it's directed at the other player specifically, not in a conversation with your teammate IMO). hopefully he can learn from this (and some of the posters in this thread can too with their close-minded views), and we can move on. go Astros, and screw the Fraudgers btw stop with this "snowflake" and "triggered" and "alt-right" lingo. seriously...
When I was first living in Argentina and hadn't picked up the Castellano inflections and idioms, one of the most common things I heard when speaking Spanish with friends and students was "Oh, you sound so Mexican." It was always said with a smile and a laugh, but it was really, deep down, meant to be offensive. I just said, "uh, yeah, I'm a gringo from Texas, what the hell did you think I'd sound like?".
Astros are the better team but lots of shadiness going I do not agree at all. A fine is useless to people as rich as the baseball players. A minimum one game ban should be given, though as a Dodgers fan I won't complain if it's more.
I'm more dumbfounded by using "it wasn't meant to offend" and the buffoons that agree with that. Yeah I called him a ***ger but it's because I had no success in beating black men at sports. Ludicrous to say, slants eye jokes are not offensive.
What's also great? Thinking you only have 1 late-night beer left, then walking ouside, sticking your hand in the icewater, and finding 2.
This is actually more common than you would think. Not just whites though. Is it racist? Not at all. Ignorant? Sure. Offensive? Depending on how the person takes it. I couldn’t care less though if someone referred to me as “mejicanito” though.
I heard it a million times in Panama (very large population with Chinese ancestry b/c of the canal). In Costa Rica every brown skinned Tico called the black skinned Ticos "negro". It's just how they roll, took me a bit to realize it.
Speaking as an Asian and someone who just got his hair cut like Yuli because he was playing so well I’m not cool with this. That said I’m not going to Throw away my Stros jerseys and shave my head over it. Yuli did a stupid and juvenile thing for a 33 year old he should know better and just excusing only means he learns nothing from it. I’m glad Yu Darvish took the high road on this and I will follow his example. I’m biased but I think it would be a shame for this series to be decided on something not on the field. I think the best thing to do would be for Yuli and Darvish to have a joint press conference where Yuli can give a public apology to Darvish amd learn something from this.
Agreed on it being the norm to refer to Darvish as chinito, because it is the norm. But you don't make slants eyes gestures and not know exactly what you are doing. I'm angry because Houston finally has a feel good team that a lot of people are behind. The media is behind. This is just a stupid horrible distraction. If the team or baseball doesn't suspend him, you just let the world know, much to soonrockstros potential delight appearantly, that any moronic reason is ok to mock someone's race.
I got banned from dallas-mavs.com for being a Rockets fan on there, lol. My buddy was a mod and he banned me!
If the man was black, and in the background he was making stereotype facial features with his lips or nose would it be? Exactly. Or is just ok because he is Asian and asians should be accepting of it?
Not my question. And no, what Yuli did is not ok, everyone pretty much agrees with that. I said my piece earlier, not much upside to debating it more.
I've known a lot of people who say racist things that frequently say they just talk way and how they're not racists. Actually it's pretty damn common. So his intent is pretty irrelevant to me. I'm sick of people defending behavior that rarely targets them.
