What is NBA Audio League Player Stat called "EFFICIENCY"?

I recently came across extra NBA game features available in NBA Audio League Pass obtained through REAL AUDIO for about $10/month which also gives me live broadcast of all the Rockets games.

One neat thing for out of town listeners who have no other source to hear the game, is that you get updated complete game statisitics on both teams players (points scored, minutes played ,etc.). Its not readily apparent, you have to hit a button called "flash" below the game stats for the Rockets.

After you get there, one interesting option button provided was to include a stat I'm not familiar with called Player "EFFICIENCY" which appeared to be a function of points, minutes and shooting percentage. I don't believe rebounds and other non-offensive stats was included in the rating.

Then, if selected as an option, it went on to list the efficiency of the TOP TEN players for the game combining both teams. Really interesting to follow during the game since they had colorful graphics that got brighter in color as the efficiency rating increased to MAX. Ming had the top rating and his season average of about 22 was a little bit higher than his points for the game and his season average; and the Rockets mashed the Clippers as a team. Francis was a close second and Taylor was 3rd as I recall for the Rockets (its interesting that if the Clippers are included, Taylor only dropped to 4th place - guess which Clipper 3rd?).

Can any one tell me how to compute this efficiency stat?

Also, for those veterans members out there, how useful is this stat in your opinion and do coaches like Van Gundy use it? Is it something new? Do other NBA teams use it?

    I think they should.

I don't know, I always wondered that too.

Accordingly, you now get five stars.

Yao is #13 and Francis is #32. Per 48 minutes Yao is #7 while Francis drops off the list.

The complete link that allows you to sign up to listen to ALL NBA games is shown below, or just go to: www.nba.com and follow the directed options to get to the link I gave you. Remember its offered as a part of Real One Player so you will need to download the Player which is a part of the deal to get the NBA games on radio. Again, its a total of $9.95/mo although they do offer a free trial. Good luck.

micah1j: Thanks for the info, but to be sure , what is G? Also, I just looked up Iverson's efficeincy stat in tonight Sixers victory over Bucks 96 to 91 does his stats below fit the formula?

    Iverson: PTS = 28, RB = 2 (0 OFF + 2 DEF), A = 5, F = 3, MIN = 32, FG = 12/27, 3P = 2/5, ST = 2, TO = 6, BS = 0.

FOr these stats in this game his EFF = 12 and his average = 19 (which I'm guessing is for the season)

micah1j: I just went to the site you referenced, I didn't know they ranked all players for all teams for the season - how did you ever find that ???

G must be number of games played; seems to me they aught to track minutes played as part of the rating as well.

Now I see where you got the rankings you quoted. I was just refering to the up to the minute game stats for the Clippers/Rockets games least night; it really is fun to track this while listening to the game. Again to get to this option:

garthomps: After downloading the Player and signing up for Audio League Pass and selecting game to listen to:

    1) Sign on to Real One Player (there will be an icon on desktop)
    2) Sign on to www. nba.com (after Player is loaded)
    3) Select Audio League Pass Button (left of screen)
    4) Select Live Scoreboard Button (top of screen)
    5) Go to lower window (1/2 screen) and scroll down to quarterby-quarter score box for Rockets game
    6) Click on "flash" button below game stats for Rockets (or other team)
    7) Click on Efficiency button (one of 3 options to present stats)

G stands for games played. This is a stat that is averaged out over the entire season. If you want to do it for one game, I guess you'd divide by 1.
