My brother lives in the area. He's got fires within a few miles of his house. Burning embers and wind cause those fires to move miles in no time. I was supposed to go see him, but had to cancel my flight tomorrow. I hope they can get those under control soon.
My aunt lives close to Napa and her home is surrounded by fires at the moment. She is not able to return to her neighborhood either. She said some of her neighbors woke up in the middle of the night and had to flee immediately with just the clothes on their back because there were flames just feet from their house. Scary stuff
These fires aren't no joke, we just got through a huge fire in Portland. Drove from San Diego to Portland last month and the entire state of California was brown and all the grass was dead. These fires get out of control very easy.
I sincerely hope all your loved ones are safe. This fire is spreading with unmatched ferocity due to higher than normal winds and over abundance of fuel. Even some of the vineyards, which normally act as a firebreak, are burned to the ground because of the wind and heat. But the worst is the loss of lives, 17 so far, and over 2000 structures totally decimated. One report on Monday stated that the fire spread 16 miles in only half a day.
i have colleagues in the oakland hills that had to leave their homes because of smoke. and what's happened to Santa Rosa is so tragic- looks like a bombed out city.
