With all the talk of Toronto and Chicago swapping half their rosters, and then getting the mavs involved for more, it piques the question -- the guys 'out there', supposedly on the market or 'available in the right deal' leads me to wonder, 'Just how much is ______ worth on the trade market?'

    Guys like:
T Mac (I hope CD is asking that very question!)
    BBarry (ditto, CD)
    Mash (ditto the ditto, CD)
    Crawford
CButler (with BG or EJ??? but for what in return???)
'sheed (or anyone else on Po'land)
    SAR
    Jamison
    Harpring
    Harrington

What are these guys really worth if put on 'eNBAy' today for any in the NBA to bid on? (Many are 'fits', I'd think, for the Rox. But they would also be 'fits' in lots of places.)

    Just curious...

I really wish people would not use those nicknames, it doubles the time it takes for dumb ppl like me to read posts...

and I still don't know who "SAR" is...last I heard, he was rampant in Asia...

Considering his contract I assume S-hareef A-bdul R-ahim would be worth less. Same with Crawford being due a new (and perhaps Arenas like deal) after the season.

Like I asked, the values are just not clear -- at least not to me.

Part of the difficulty in your try to make an assessment is that there are so many variables...a teams' current roster composition (positions, chemistry, # of vets), whether a team is contending or rebuilding, a teams LTax status, how many players does a team have under contract for 2004-05 because they can only protect 8 but they must leave at least 1 unprotected if they have fewer than 8 contracts, what style does a team use, do they stress O or D?

I'll use Kelvin Cato's trade value as an example.

To the SAC Kings, Cato is pretty worthless. He makes big bucks and they are over the LTax (if it kicks in), they have Vlade and Brad Miller and they run a passing, motional style offense.

To the Knicks, Cato would be a good compliment to McDyess if if ever returns. Given the nature of the EC, a McDyess-Cato combo would be very formidable. But the Knicks would have to be sure of Dice's recovery. Plus the Knicks generally have no problem with handing out big contracts.

To MIA, Cato might have some high value but you can bet that the Heat would want the Rox to take on Eddie Jones.

To CLE, Cato would not have much value even though they are in the EC. Ilgauskas is a quality big man and offers some half-court game to compliment Lebron, Davis and Miles. But let's suppose the Cato PF experiment continues to be a huge success and Carlos Boozer has a McDyess or Grant Hill type injury?

So is Cato's trade value an 8, a 4 or a 1? Depends on the trade partner IMO.

Yea totally, there's no such thing as "trading bucks" where a certain player is worth whatever amount.

I think you need to answer the question by asking what kind of player do you get in return. The team that is trading will generally get back contracts of = dollars. What they hope to achieve is :

a player at a different position
a player with a different character
a player with a different type of game
    a more favorable contract

If there is a big market for a player/contract, there will be a good quality option that can be had in return, that might also satisfy the trading team's other goals. If not, not. The team is stuck with an albatross they have to pay someone else to take off their hands (see Moochie Norris).

From the list above, we saw Antawn Jamison, a player/contract with some plus/minus problems, was able to be exchanged for
NVE, another player with some plus/minus problems. We can measure the player/contract's relative value by looking at the amount of risk the trading team has to assume to exit the contract. The more risk the team has to assume, the less value is assigned the trade asset.
