Bannon: Trump firing of Comey was the ‘biggest mistake in modern political history’

Former White House strategist Stephen K. Bannon believes the firing of FBI director James B. Comey by President Trump was the biggest mistake “maybe in modern political history.”

Bannon made the extraordinary statement during an online segment of his interview with “60 Minutes” broadcast Sunday.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt that if James Comey had not been fired,” he told interviewer Charlie Rose, “we would not have a special counsel.”

“We would not have the Mueller investigation in the breadth that clearly Mr. Mueller is going,” he added, referring to special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s appointment to investigate any possible connection between Trump or his campaign with Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Is hiring Steve Bannon as a Presidential advisor the second biggest mistake in modern political history?

The guy who pissed off both parties. He had a snowballs chance in hell of not getting fired, regardless of who won the election.

It was only a big mistake if there was something to hide that wouldn't have been found out otherwise other than the lengths of he obstruction efforts.

The Special Counsel appointment helped get the investigation out of the political spectrum for the most part especially with Congress (Nunes making up conspiracy theories, etc.). However I don't know how Comey wouldn't be tracking along the same path that Mueller is, and that he wouldn't eventually find the same things, but in a more public fashion as when he would then be sharing that information with Congress, there would be far more leaks than with the non-political Mueller who is running a pretty closed door operation.

Unless you got something to hide, having an independent investigator with the reputation that Mueller has to clear you is way more impactful to Trump than the less than trustworthy Congress with shills like Nunes who will run a mockery of an investigation and give a slap in the face to the intelligence of the American people.

I'd say the appointment of the Special Counsel will ultimately be the best thing that ever happened to Trump politically if he comes out of it with no wrongdoing.

Why is anyone listening to Bunyan? Need to let him sink back into his slime pool. Can't believe CBS gave him all this attention.

    YEP

Which adds more curiosity that there is something major to hide. Well we already found out via the Donald Jr. Email that of course there was some bad stuff to hide, but illegal... we will see. The fact that Bannon who is in the know of what is to hide is saying its that detrimental says something.

But under a normal situation with an INNOCENT president, you should say good... I'll be vindicated when the truth comes out and it will kill conspiracy theories.

This. People on CNN, NYT, etc. act as if Breitbart is some major media conglomerate or something. Even with their new notoriety,

By comparison Breitbart gets about 80 million viewers on their website every 6 months. CNN.com gets almost 600 million, and that's just online traffic to their website. Breitbart is an online only form of media.

This guy will become pretty irrelevant pretty quick if the media doesn't cover him like he's Michael Jordan.

America "electing" trump President is the biggest mistake of modern American political history. Bannon is just one of many responsible. True, Bannon reeks of excrement and looks like he's strung out on one drug or another, but the bigoted creature doesn't deserve as much credit as he gets. Not in my opinion.

All talk this from Bannon amounts to an, "If only he had listened to me!" attempt to puff himself up. Like trump, if he isn't showered with accolades, he starts to shrink, both physically and mentally. In trump's case, there's very little mental shrinkage left. Any more, and what brain he possesses will disappear entirely. We will be left with a husk of a man sitting at the desk in the Oval Office, offal wearing a suit, flies buzzing around.

Steve Bannon is an extremely bright man..... I would not ever underestimate him. Having said that, the guy looks TERRRRIBLE. He looks like he is at death's door. Cut down on the red meats, carbs and find a hobby to distract you from the losing battle..... maybe make ships that fit in a bottle or volunteer at a food pantry. Otherwise, you are not making it past 65.

Perfectly natural molting for his species.

And @Nook, if he followed your advice, he would lose that valuable connection to the seething masses of self-pitying, victim-feeling white men in the nation.

    Bannon is full of bleep,

this over-stated rhetoric is but a dig against Kushner, the political neophyte who had recommended the firing
imo, the biggest mistakes in modern political history
    • Gore taking his home state of Tenn, where he previously had won every election that he had entered, for granted. Boring Gore never bothered to campaign in his home state, effectively giving Tenn's 5 electoral votes to GWB. Had Gore held his home state, Fla's voting chad would not have mattered.
    • Hilary Clinton's hubris in 2008, so convinced of her inevitability as the Democratic nominee that she never bothered to enter in the early primaries (Iowan NH, etc.) once Obama won several early primaries in a row, his campaign had gained too much momentum for Hilary to overcome
    • Hilary Clinton's hubris in 2008 so convinced of her inevitability as the eventual POTUS, she never bothered to campaign after winning the DNC nomination.
    • Hilary's handling of her emails in 2016
    • GWB' invasion of Iraq under false pretense
