If Nazis are marching/protesting in a city then here is the optimal outcome: their opinion is allowed to be heard by all those who want to hear it. The dissenting opinion is also heard by all those who want to hear and hopefully many give a dissenting opinion. This can be achieved by speaking the day after, by putting a piece in the local paper, or even handing out flyers during the Nazis speech. Those who hear both opinions come to the conclusion that the Nazis are evil and disagree with their position. Assuming the above takes place then the police need to do nothing. What usually happens is the dissenting opinion shows up and tries to prevent the Nazi's opinions from being heard by those who want to. This usually starts as trying to scream over them but ultimately ends in violence (the DD approach). In the end, nobody hears either opinion during this.

The cops should have done their jobs and kept the two sides separated like they did in Boston. By allowing AntiFa to attack the pre-planned and approved march and demonstration, the cops essentially created a toxic atmosphere. Even if it is scumbags exercising their right to free speech, you can't allow them to be attacked or things will get out of control like they did in Charlottsville. Another thing that would help eliminate the issue is if there were rules preventing the wearing of masks that conceal your identity at events like that. Rules like that all but eliminate the AntiFa presence which will greatly reduce the chance of violence and make it MUCH easier to identify and go after anyone who would get violent anyway. I know i largely mentioned AntiFa given that they are the group that is just constantly violent every time they show up to a protest or demonstration, but the rules and procedures would work to prevent violence from ANY group and make it much easier to identify and lock up members of ANY group that would be violent.
