Im trying to get the hell out of miami tomorrow, hopefully my flight isn't cancelled, lots of flights to houston are getting cancelled this week, I saw over 200+ today. Im worried I wont be able to board a flight back home and ill be stuck in miami. Id have to ride it out in my condo in south beach, im 2 blocks from the ocean, hopefully i wont have to do that. Im so sick of these hurricanes, both my hometowns have been through this in a 2 week period, ready to move to vegas and be in the desert. I work from home anyways.
I spent 2013 and 2014 in Peter island BVA. Last year east coast of Anguilla on Rendezvous Bay. This year St Martin. I feel sick for the residents there. Those islands are toast, especially Peter Island. Very sad, such great people who live there. Some of the friendliest I've ever been around.
Hoping the best for you bro. They just moved the track a bit west but Miami would still get it bad. I stayed here waiting for Rita scared to death and got lucky. I stayed for Ike and dealt with. In no way would I stay here for a storm like this. Zero chance.
I've been through a lot of hurricanes, even on islands in the Caribbean. If you live within 25 miles of a coast line and anything over a cat 3 is heading your way you need to get the hell out. It is one of the most frightening, deadly things you'll ever see. It's not worth it to test your luck.
Do you have a car? If necessary rent one, get out. Do not ride "this" storm out two blocks from the water. You are in real danger. Seriously, leave ASAP. I am really concerned about you. This storm is likely to be worse than Katrina which put 20-40 feet of water several blocks inland in Bay St. Louis, east of NO.
You are absolutely correct. I have been through several. Even 100 mi was not far enough away to keep a Cat 4 from dropping multiple trees on my roof.
Thanks for the concerns man. Yes I do have a car, but I have a ticket tomorrow so hopefully will be ok leaving town. I feel like driving could be a disaster if people get stuck out there. My condo is on the 8th floor of a building built in 2005 in south beach, so I was told we have hurricane proof windows. I stocked up on water and snacks the other day because I thought I was going to ride it out but then when it became much worse I bought a ticket out. If for some reason my flight is cancelled tomorrow due to issues in houston's airport, would american airlines possibly send me somewhere else? It's just the wife and I, but we dont really want to be here but if the flights cancelled so late, not sure what we could do other than ride it out. The 8th floor is 80+ feet in the air, shouldn't that be safe from the initial surge? Hurricane proof windows as good as they say?
Yes, I believe they would let you fly somewhere else, but regardless, you need to have a contingency plan. Rent a car, take a bus...it doesn't matter. You need to evacuate. You always hope and pray for the best, but don't take any chances.
If you can get away, then get away. Don't worry about whether or not the windows are going to save you. The safest place is "away".
At 8th floor, you'll be fine from flying debris and flooding. Flying debris shouldn't be an issue past 30 ft in elevation. Your building is new enough that it should be designed to withstand 175 mph sustained winds. Irma is right around that strength so you should be fine since there should some additional safety margin. Still a bit too close for comfort to me though. Though honestly, I would still get out even if you have to drive. If Miami is in the path of destruction, you'll probably be without power or water for days if not a week or two. It would be very uncomfortable regardless of whether your place is safe or not. There is still 3-4 days before landfall. I think you can easily make it out to somewhere like Atlanta in 3 days if you leave early very soon. I suggest also getting some gas canisters and carry an extra 10-15 gallons of fuel just in case you get stuck in traffic. I would not bank on American working with you to get you out in an efficient manner. I bet all of their flights are absolutely booked full and very very few will miss their flight. So if they tell you to fly stand-by, I'd hightail it out of there in a car.
Even if there is only a .5% chance of getting seriously injured or worse it is not worth staying. Get out of the city regardless. You get nothing positive from staying and the only negative is sitting in traffic for a period of time. Hopefully it will be a mute point and your flight will take off. If your dead set on flying then they will probably transfer you. If not fly somewhere else and take a vacation. That sounds better than sitting out an epic storm right next to the ocean. Go skydiving if you want thrills lol

Do these people NOT know what a reservoir is and how it helps with floods? WTF else do you expect when you live next to a bayou or a reservoir? Am I taking crazy pills?
Just because the release was the right thing to do doesn't mean the property owners don't have a claim. That being said, probably nobody should live that close to a reservoir.
