For the lazy there will be a total eclipse across Austin on April 8, 2024.

Well if you get bored and want to see what I'm seeing hit me up! Seriously. I have an extra pack and most supplies. I'm not quite sure where Glando is but I know where Casper is. I am actually going solo currently. Surprisingly nobody wants to drive 24 hours across the country then backpack up a small mountain for a 2 and a half minute eclipse then hike around for a week. I just couldn't pass up the opportunity.

I really want to head up to Montana. Glacier NP is at the top of my camping bucket list. Any other areas I should check out? The state is huge and all of it looks amazing.

Thanks, I am bringing bear spray and odor proof bags so I should be fine. Plus I figure I saw The Revenant twice so I think I could kill a bear with my hands if I needed to.

I'm in Boulder, CO. Glando Res/State Park is the closest point along the eclipse path. If I were to go to the Tetons, instead, I'd take a different path.

Are you serious about taking on buddies? Your plan looks so awesome. We should take this offline. I'm serious.

You can't go wrong with Glacier. Nearby is Flathead Lake which is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the lower 48. Of course there are lots of other smaller lakes and rivers in the same area.

Really though, anywhere in the western half of the state has excellent fishing, camping and hiking opportunities. Yellowstone and its surrounding National Forests are also wonderful, although Yellowstone is very crowded. Go in the fall...late September/early October when there are smaller crowds and the color changes make for absolutely beautiful surroundings.

I live in Redmond, OR which is in the path of totality. The eclipse is going to be awesome here. 38 seconds of complete coverage.

Of course after the eclipse I still have to live in Redmond, OR. Less awesome.

Yeah I was thinking about getting one but they are so bulky. I figured I would be fine if I used odor proof bags for everything (food, trash, toiletries etc) and hung everything in a stuff sack high up in a tree like 100 yards away from my site. That is what I have done in the past but that was just black bear country.

I'm flying to Omaha to catch the total eclipse. Does anybody have any must-see recommendations in Omaha/Lincoln? It will be my first time there.

I hear Omaha is particularly beautiful when seen from the window seat of a departing flight.

Many years ago, I was lucky enough to witness an eclipse while chemically enhanced. What I found most mesmerizing was the shadows cast by the light through trees. Thousands of mini-eclipse shadows.

I found this google pic as an example but you have to imagine the shadows moving with the wind, hearing the colors, and feeling the chemical enhancement swirling...

It was awesome. Deckard knows what I'm talking about...

    Sounds good.

I would check w local rangers ahead o time. Some areas require cans out west now, some don't. I've seen bears get in good hangs before.
