Jumper cables, a good flashlight with a "flashing" feature, a spare with the right amount of air in it (anyone have a flat spare when you really need it?), a compressed air "fix-a-flat" thingy, a quart of oil and a funnel, a roll of paper towels (and toilet paper), a few basic tools, a couple of bottles of water, whatever I need to hook up my cell phone charger to the car battery (assuming battery isn't dead), things I'm forgetting at the moment, and possibly a larger vehicle with more storage ;).

I got a list of my contacts written down. If my phone goes out, I'm done. I don't know anybody's number by heart.

I keep jumper cables in my car, but I also keep one of these:

    Lithium jump starter

You can jump your car without anybody else around. It has enough energy for multiple jump start attempts. It also has an integral flashlight and has a USB port that you can charge your phone or other electronics from. You don't have to charge it that often either. I top mine off every 3 months. I've seen similar chargers at Costco.
