First off, I'm lucky this year. I'm traveling for business quite a bit and am able to go to a ton of Rockets games on the road. It also helps that your business partner is a ticket broker.

I sat probably 3 rows behind the Rockets bench for this game. Some of you may have read my pontification on why the Rockets are so unwatchable this year (in wins and losses) and this game was no different.

I'm not going to go into any diatribe on how much these Rockets are breaking my heart, but just relay some of the things I heard.

With 1 minute to go in regulation, Rockets up by 5, JVG instructs his team to let the Raptors run clock because it's now a possession game. Don't foul - What happens, not 2 seconds roll off the clock and Mobley fouls. JVG's exact words: "Run clock, play defense, but don't put yourself in a position where a Ref has a chance to make a call." Result: Mobley foul within 2 seconds putting Carter on the line.

With time running out after Bosh's incredible 3, JVG instructs his team: "Move the ball for passes on the wing or post and get a shot from a pass" Result: Steve doesn't pass the ball and takes a wild shot.

In overtime 1, Rockets tied (or up by 2, I can't remember exactly) with a minute to go, JVG instructs his team out of timeout, "just deny the ball, don't go after any steals, stay in front of your man, do not foul." Result: Kevin Cato immediate foul on Bosh. 2 points.

Several times in the 4th, the play was called for Yao. Also, called for Yao from the left wing (Cuttino's area for entry pass). Amount of times Yao got the ball? twice - 1 for a turnover.

Yes, Rocks beat Phoenix, but I still have yet to see:

    1. Steve not turn the ball over because of a between the league dribble
    2. An assist from Cat to Yao. Any assist at all. Forget the fact that Yao has yet to get the ball on any pick and roll.
    3. Any indication that these Rockets have any cerebral instincts to their games (Yao included).

It's great that Steve made those 2 jumpers to keep the Rockets in it, but he missed 3 prior and worst of all, wasn't listening to what JVG instructed to play inside out with Yao and to get ball movement. He was benched in the 2nd quarter for this same type of play (JVG screamed at him saying, "Steve, you're not passing ball. The team is stagnant"), but I guess in crunch time, JVG can't do that.

One positive note: Overheard a convo from Ewing to Michael Curry before the game and Ewing told him that Yao is much more aggressive since the lost to the Mavs, in practice and in games he's shown improvement.

I'm driving to Philly tomorrow morning...

good post, thanks, I think JVG might have to introduce some disciplinary measures if the players are blatantly not following his calls.

It's like, "in one ear, out the other" - seems as if they still have some learning/growing up/listening to do.

Not surprising. You can see Van Gundy's face in the background while Steve walked back from that off balance 3. He had this "what the f*ck was that?" look on his face.

I hope a reporter asks Steve if those crazy 3's he took were planned. I'd like to see his explaination.

This is great stuff to hear! Thanks for the "inside" scoop! Now I have restored some faith in JVG. Just by watching the games on TV, I couldn't tell all the ISO play near the end of game and the 2 OTs are results of JVG's strategy, or just Francis's selfish play. Now I have no doubt. I am sure JVG will watch the tape over and over again. A few more losses will be enough for him to start looking for a real PG.

JVG should do what Brown did to AI, bench SF for entire game, put him in the dog house and let him grow up.

Maybe let the coach try to resolve it trough coaching first? Too radical?

But Tran...this combines with what we know JVG was saying after the game to paint a very colourfull and complete picture , however distressing it looks to us. Much appreciated.

I would like it if JVG made Francis watch the tape and show him what we all saw tonight.

Early on this season Steve recognized the value of sharing the ball. He even mentioned how Chicago could be a better team if they shared the ball.

He forgot that today. Steve should be shown the tape from today's game and have to read that quote 10 times.

Excellent Tranmerica34! We are getting quite an insider informations here. JVG is gonna have one hell of a time trying to make them do as he said. But you have to wonder if the players had no choice but to abandon JVG instruction since the plan didn't go as plan and bailed out on their own.

I think Van Gundy is hoping a few close game failures will get them to understand what he is saying.

He called them Fragile after the Dallas loss, and is basically saying his guards played STUPID tonight.

You know what? He is right !!

If Steve does watch the tape again I hope he takes a close look at the play right before he took that off balance 3 at the end of regulation. He just blew by his defender with ease and all the defender could do was foul him. He just completely left him in the dust. Yet for some reason, Steve decides not to try to drive by again and settle for that 3 pointer.

Being uncoachable and dogging other team's player of the game(Bosh) after a loss on the same night are just too much to let go of. Sour grapes and individualism are the trademarks of loser's mentality. It does sound good after four years the team leader is still in the process of developing his game and mentality. Francis'd better collect himself quick or JVG will show him the way out sooner or later.

Tranmerica34, nice post! I saw the game on League Pass, and saw that foul Cato commited just as you described. Van Gundy immediatly raised both his arms to his head, looking like he was about to blow up. The camera zoomed in on him as he sat down next to Keith Jones grumbling something. Definately was not a happy camper. There is something I am VERY concerned about what I saw....After Cato commited the foul, the camera showed him smiling. I was like, "what the f**k?" I don't know if Van Gundy saw him smiling, but I'd be furious.

Sorry, I meant "it does NOT sound good after four years...".

I really hope you don't mean that you didn't see Cat get any assists at all. Not that we're doing all that well in assists, but Cat has been the number one Rocket in assists since the Phoenix game. In fact, he had twice as many assists as the number two assist person in today's game, and he had more than twice as many assists as the number two person in the Phoenix game. Ironically, (well.....not to me) the number two person in assists for both games was NOT our starting point guard.

Does this stat make him a brilliant player? Of course not. On the flip side though....does this observation by you (if indeed that's what you meant by what you wrote....you haven't seen an assist by Cat since the Phoenix game) mean that you are trying to deride Cat without any basis in merit? In normal conversation, I'd say a resounding "yes." But in this venue, I'd say that you're just keeping rather popular company. Most of the people around here who deride Cat don't do so intelligently (and there is certainly some room for some intelligent derision). In fact, they usually somehow manage to pull most of their comments right out of their asses while the whole time their asses are plugged up with their head, shoulders, and the better part of their chests.

I hope you’re not keeping company with these people. I hope that what you really meant is that whenever Cat was making one of the many assists he’s made over the past few games you were busy ordering a beer, staring at the cheerleaders, or visiting the little boy’s room.

So... our guards blatantly ignored JVG's orders. Thanks for making my day 2 mins into it. Nahhh, nice insight.
