I'm thinking of purchasing a new computer soon, although I don't have alot of cash to spend. In fact, I have barely any, which makes me wonder why I'm even bothering to get a new computer now, but oh well. I'm looking for a PC for somewhere under 800, preferably under 700 if possible.

And I, uh, erhm, mostly want this computer to be capable of playing fancy computer games and whatnot. I'm looking at BestBuy.com and they have these e-machine computers that are really cheap, although they have only 256 RAM. Which can be easily expanded of course, although I have no idea what other factors are important for having a fast computer.

    Any suggestions, BBS computer gurus?

For gaming, the most important thing i think is the video card, then processing speed, then Ram (make sure to get DDR).

They surely can't be as bad as Compaq. I purchased a Compaq laptop last year and it has been the single crappiest piece of computer I've ever owned...

Hell, I actually had an e-machine before that, despite having half the RAM and being 700 mhz slower, it could run programs this crappy Compaq can't. I hate Compaq!

You could build yourself a nice PC for $700. I don't know if you're up to it though. It's really pretty easy . . .

I'd recommend building your own computer before buying an already pre- assembled one. You can usually get more bang for your buck if your willing to build one on your own.

After I do my Christmas shopping in the next couple of weeks, I plan on saving up my cash for a new computer. I'm waiting for the new 64 bit process Windows OS, so I can purchase one of the new AMD 64 bit processors with it. :D That and I'm saving up for a new vid card, bigger hard drive, RAM, motherboard, CD drive, and DVD burner. And hopefully a new monitor too. I'd like to think I could get all those by the time the new Windows OS comes out for a relatively cheaper price then buying a pre-assembled computer with all that.

Do some shopping there and see what prices you can get for assembling it yourself. Also among those on-line stores, crucial.com is the best for RAM, and newegg.com is consistently one of the best at shipping and handling over most other websites. In addition to that, I forget the website but it rates online computer stores for their customer service, and how accurate their S&H policies are.

    e-Machines are worthless.

I support several of them at work and they are always crapping out with random problems.

If you're gonna spend the money, do it right.

While I'm sure assembling it myself would be cheaper, there's no way that I could do it properly, and no way I'd want to try to do that.

    Okay, okay, what about this...

Computer junk I know nothing about

So what if I were to buy this, and then give it really good RAM and a good video card and all that...is that still a crappy thing, should I keep looking?

Geez, I feel so clueless when it comes to all this stuff.

Go to Dell.com and click on refurbished systems....get a great machine with a great warranty for a price you can afford.

I have purchased over 400 of them in the last 6 years for home and work, and have had great success.

I'd stay away from Celeron Processors if I were you. Just a word of advice.

celeron processors are great for daily computer tasks (email, ms word, internet). You will be greatly disappointed running a celeron for gaming.

    go with P4 or AMD

But what if I had to take less RAM and video memory to get a P4 instead? Is it still worth it?
