Good snow is falling in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado right now. We may get 8-12 inches at 7,000 feet here in NM, with much more in the ski areas. Long term outlook is not great, as January is expected to be warmer and dry in NM, so if you plan on skiing in this part of the country, get here in December. Wolf Creek and Durango are looking good for the duration.
By the way, if skiing (cold weather, crowded resorts) isn't your thing, those are great places to hang out in summer. It's a bit more affordable, and great hiking and scenic driving in the mountains... OK, back to your regularly scheduled skiing discussion.
oh Northern New Mexico is beautiful. I lived in Eastern NM for 4 years and I enjoyed it, especially the weather. The Abiquiu area just takes your breathaway on a nice summer day. I also enjoyed skiiing at Ski Apache in Ruidoso...
i went to ski apache last year and stayed in some cabins in the Upper Canyon area. we had a great time, and am trying to schedule another trip in feb. i live in houston so we actually drove to save money on plane tickets. it came out pretty economical for a week long trip. it took us about 13 hours going and 15 hours coming back. on the way back we drove to carlsbad caverns so that extended the trip time. if you can stand the drive it relatively cheap place to go skiing compared to other resorts. i definitely recommend ski apache and while your there stop by and see white sands (1hr. away) and carlsbad(3hrs away). http://www.skiapache.com
Bought my discount ski tix yesterday. Booked a place to stay last week, and arranging another trip for the spring. And there's a dusting of snow in the mountains from last night. Think snow baby.
I used to live in the San Luis Valley in So Colorado. Impressive mountain ranges both East and West. Took out my knees cartwheeling down Wolf Creek in my skis.
I plan on skiing for the first time in my adult life this winter. I have heard that snow boarding is easier and there is less of a risk of knee injury. Anyone know if this is true?
Heading up to Colorado this Christmas to see that magical stuff that they call "snow." It'll be the first time in my nearly twenty years that I've seen real good to honest stay on the ground for more than an hour snow.
I just moved to ABQ in January so I can't wait for the cold weather...I know it won't snow here like in Northern NM, but the Sandia's will have some so its ok... Go Rox!!!
