He clearly said a traded player exception of around $11 million. He mentioned the mid level and biannual exceptions on their own.
You must not be understanding what he's proposing. He makes the example that we use the TPE to acquire the expiring contracts of Bellinelli and Jameer Nelson and THEN combine those contracts with Ariza for Melo. He never combines the TPE with the player.
good point. i don't think we'll end up with hayward or george. we probably wont get the clippers to S&T blake to us either. we don't need lowry. so i think our best options are millsap and melo. i don't think its worth waiting around for the 30 or 60 days. if you have a chance to acquire one of these guys (or both) you gotta do it. we'll have to use the TPE to fill out the bench later in the summer or during the season.
separate trades - as specified by separating #3 and #4. #3 - acquire expirings using TPE in trade A. then in a separate roster move #4 - create package of expirings and other players in trade B.
Possible if it's planned out months in advance. Player's can't be immediately aggregated in new trades.
It does sound too good to be true. $11 million is basically Louis and Bev's total salary next year. So it's like we traded them for $11 million cap space to find their replacement(s) of our choice in the open market? Furthermore, that means Dekker and a bunch of guys that nobody ever heard of that were Rockets for less than an hour and a pick landed us CP3? Gtfo here Morey.
What Morey did sounds better than a TPE to me, since you can't package a TPE with another player, but you can package non-guaranteed contracts any way you want
In the press conference Morey specifically mentioned targeting a player in the $12 million range (if I recall correctly) so that maybe gives idea what he's targeting
So with a July 7th guarantee date for Ryan Kelly, that means we want to make a deal after the new year starts but before July 7th. Assuming Morey was tipping his hand when he mentioned "about $12 million" in salary that they could take back, here are some names we could be targeting. These include guys who are in the price range and are either known to have been available recently or MIGHT be available because of a team trying to clear cap space (like San Antonio) Jared Dudley ($10 million) Danny Green ($10 million) if SAS needs/wants to clear salary cap for a move Wilson Chandler ($12 million) Would be a very interesting piece on this team Courtney Lee ($11-12 million) Not sure NYK want to just dump him Iman Shumpert ($10 million) Not a fan at all, but apparently Morey tried to get him last year
Echoing what I believe @Carl Herrera suggested, you could do the poo-poo platter for Courtney Lee and then Ryan Anderson for Melo and that would save the Knicks a ton of money. Also wonder if Onuaku and a 2nd or international rights would be enough for the Nuggets to give up Wilson Chandler. He's not a shooter, but as a bench player? He's versatile and could play against GSW.
Wilson Chandler would be an awesome pick up. He would fill the 3-4 void left by the Dekker departure and would be a significant upgrade to Dekker. I think he would also push Ariza to the bench making him (probably) the best 3 and D player coming off of the bench in the league.
Players can immediately be traded if they aren't packaged though. So... with some financial footwork Morey is going to land us LeBron, Wade, and Melo. And a nice side helping of Paul George.
...which might not be the worst thing for Ariza's long term career given his age and how many minutes he has logged the last several years. He really has been a workhorse.
It's better in terms of what you mentioned, however it does have a deadline. We cannot go into the regular season with those contracts so they will have to be waived. The good thing is I costed was cash considerations so no biggie. Its a nice I asset to have this summer considering Chris Paul and James Harden not getting any younger
