He could have just signed with us as a free agent. He gets more money, but takes away some solid role players.

We did it for a few reasons.

1 - we have him for sure
2 - CP gets more money this way
3 - we are more flexible financially
4 - he didn't absolutely screw LA, which saves a little face.

Ummm because we can still sign a player in the $12 million range. because we still can trade ryno, ariza, and hopefully not gordon for PG13. Morey knows what he's doing.

Isn't it because if he did what he did, he could enable the special Max Contract that was negotiated into the most recent CBA? Something about being 33 or something. Plus cap space is needed now.

Lock this up... this dude obviously hasn't read anything today. We got more cap space and exceptions. We can round out our roster with talent that fits the team. Plus we aren't done yet.

Instead of location, in this situation it is timing, timing, timing... plus cap exceptions

Us guy were just so groovy, so special, so damned far out that there simply wasn't a reasonable alternative.

We got to be patient with the OP. Just saw his pic

And it's #BeWell. That explains the confusion from OP

Watch the press conference. We get to stroll into July 1st (beginning of free agency) with Chris Freaking Paul already on the roster. There is major value there if we want to entice free agents to come here for cheap. If we can trade for George? We'll get good talent for 10 cents on the dollar.

We would have had to dump salary anyways. Roughly the same amount of salary.

Further, we walk out of this with the ability to sign someone with the full MLE, which would have been reduced to the Room MLE had we used cap space.

Sure, we burned a draft pick with this method, but a mid-20s pick next year wasn't going to meaningfully contribute to winning a title in the Harden era anyways.

And I don't mind facilitating CP3 exiting LA with a little class.
