We have a star in his prime with Harden... rebuilding was out of the question.... given the circumstances they got one of the best players in the NBA (CP3) and put themselves in a great position to attract/trade for others (melo, PG13, Millsap and next year even maybe Lebron) They did really good. CP3 is in make a championship happen mode... he isn't as interested in the money... I doubt he is going to do anything that cripples the Rockets ability to go out and maximize the roster (i.e. he will wait to resign until other are signed/maybe he will take less).
I think the concern that Chris Paul and Lebron team up on another team next season is legitimate. Paul has nothing to lose here and is on a better team than he would be with the clippers. If it works out awesome and if it doesn't he can peace out. Still a fantastic move and very excited to see what else Morey has in store.
Sorry I'll have to go HOLIC on you here....go look it up yourself (Though I'm pretty sure @BimaThug will have something up very soon) Getting CP by him opting in saved the Rockets money - they got rid of players they would have needed to get rid of anyway in order to sign him AND they got the best player in the deal. They will still have to clear some room to get anything significant, but it makes it easier for them to get an all-star level 3rd player. Filling out the roster with decent cheap contracts, that's one thing Morey is pretty damn good at.
So Chris Paul officially hated Doc Rivers when he declined the trade to get Melo because his son was involved... I wonder how he would feel about the Rockets if they instantly went out and got Melo after completing this trade. I imagine that would go a long way, wouldn't it?
There is no player we could add that would guarantee success and chemistry. Even if we added Lebron James or Kevin Durant we'd just have to see how they fit in after the fact. There are no guarantees in life or basketball, but our chances to contend and recruit more players improved today. There is no doubt about that.
btw: This is not possible had we bought Jordan Bell on draft day. Cashed considerations moves are limited to $3.5m in TOTAL for the whole year. Looks like Morey didn't buy a pick for a very good reason, with a strong plan to keep the fill mid-level exception.
