Right so if we had kept Brock then the plan was we had to let either Hopkins or Clowney walk which I said initially. Not good planning IMO. I hope that isn't the plan. Their job is actually to try to have sustained success for the future. McNair claimed they have a plan, it just looks like they are panicking from one move to another. If we aren't good this year we are really gonna suck without picks in the first two rounds next year
Because most teams let their best players walk out the door in free agency? (Outside of the Texans:Bouye, which was a mistake). Yep, yep, YEP, yep, and yep.
You could say the same thing about high draft picks that you're saying about free agents. You have more tape on free agents. Either way works. The Patriots don't depend on high draft picks; the packers do.
The Patriots depend on draft picks and value free agents. They aren't stupid with their money or picks.
Just speculating, but he's a free agent after this season. We have no leverage to keep him (unlike if we had offered him an extension last year). He didn't seem to happy over his contract and he can't be happy that this offense suppresses his numbers. The offense has to turn quickly, which I doubt will happen with two inexperienced QBs and a weak OL. Also, do the Texans even want to keep him? Clowney will be a bigger priority, and we need to invest in the OL.
The Texans have said multiple times he's their number one priority and they hope to re-sign him soon. It'll be announced before the season starts. Book it.
Brooks was a screwup by our medical staff. He had an easily treatable anxiety disorder that went undiagnosed until he was in Philly. That's on the GM since he chooses the docs. But yeah, Brandon can play. He was expensive, though. Hopkins isn't going anywhere.
We'll see. They said the same thing about Bouye. Last we heard that they wanted to extend Hopkins was in March. Wouldn't be surprised if Hopkins wanted to test the market if they low-ball him after an off year. Or if he just wants to leave a bottom 5 offense.
Well if he isn't happy, he is hiding it pretty well showing up to OTA's, talking about being a leader on this team and how much he loves Houston. Guys typically don't show up to OTA's when they're not happy, we've seen this firsthand a few times now. Also disagree that we have no leverage. Think we may even have more now since his options are to take our offer (assuming it's fair) or play the season risking injury or possibly having another down season, either of which would hurt his value going into FA. Of course this is all dependent on the Texans offering him a fair deal and not lowballing him. As far as the Texans wanting to keep him, all the right things have been said and done. We cleared up space moving Brock, didn't break the bank for Bouye, and didn't seem interested in getting into any bidding wars for FAs. We also have a lot of bloated contracts that could come off the books to extend both Clowney and Hopkins. With that said, I will agree with you if a deal isn't inked by week 1. A lot of off-season left though.
