Article also mentions his background, like how he played for an independent league team managed by Jose Canseco and how the Braves plucked him from the Mexican League.

He's managed to increase his K/9 rate every season since he's been in affiliated pro baseball, which I find insane.

Please enjoy these gifs of his off-speed stuff.

    - can throw it in any count

Splitter? (that's what he calls it, that's what FanGraphs calls it) Changeup? (that's what Brooks Baseball calls it)

    - mainly throws this against lefties
    - look at that drop

I'd imagine he and Gattis can drop some life knowledge on the bonus babies.

Hoyt did allow his first run of the season in the 9th inning of Friday's game, but he also struck out the side to give him 16 strikeouts in his first 6.2 innings this year.

    That's good for 23.2 K/9.

Think he has a chance to grow into a roke with more leverage. Probably won't challenge Giles, Harris, and Devenski, but could push Gregorson. Right now, he seems like the option for when Astros have the lead in 9th without a save situation.

Agreed. One of the other encouraging aspects was the fact they were all ground ball singles -- he had issues with the long ball last year in the majors,

Wow. I might have to get over being pissed about the Astros being in the American League.

Hoyt hasn't looked too hot as of late. But is it bad luck? The advanced numbers seem to think so...

Hoyt still has an excellent K:BB ratio (44:6 in 26 IP). However, opposing batters have a .418 BABIP against him (.500 in what FanGraphs deems low leverage situations) and he's allowed a lot of hard contact (40.7% per FanGraphs).

He's allowed significantly less contact this season. Whenever opposing hitters have made contact, though, it's been loud.

Under that 5.54 ERA (73 ERA+, which is park-adjusted ERA; 130 ERA-, adjusted for park and league) is a 2.68 FIP, a 2.20 xFIP (FIP in which HRs = 10.5% of fly balls induced), a 62 FIP- (FIP adjusted for park and league) and a 1.92 SIERA.
