Hmm... now that would be one heck of a challenge since regional and national tv, posters, calendars, public appearances, halftime shows, and crowds in a stadium would have really tested her abilities I guess. lol! [IMG]

You are correct. As a professional dancer, some people do frown on the professional cheerleader. The girls are not able to really show their talent because of the wave of hip-hop. I am only reacting to those who say the girls suck. The dancers are fans who enjoy the opportunity to sit side-line. The marketing staff may have them there for T and A but the the girls motivation may not be the same. There is no need to stereotype the girls. They are just having fun.

    DoD,

It is actually quite easy when dance instructors and other dance majors would never watch any of that stuff or even acknowledge it existed!

    Meduas,

The dancers will always be stereotyped. It wouldn't matter if you broke down their routines using dance notation. Our society does not allow that. They will always remain bubbly, air-headed, no skilled sex objects to the masses.

I still think they suck. Maybe they can do more technical, artistic dance routines, which I would respect, but they dont. As many here have pointed out already, the dancers are there for eye candy. I know nothing about dancing, but I fail to beleive they are doing something at a level far above others (which would also ge tmy respect) when I see thousands upon thousands of people throughout the world doing the same thing. These women did not take these jobs for respect. If they wanted dancing respect there are plenty of jobs they can pursue. Especially in Houston, with the 2nd most theater seats in the country and respected dance studios in town. Im sure they have otehr professional lives and I will respect them for that. But on the court, they are nothing more than eye candy. At every game Ive ever been to, the crowd is ALWAYS more involved/entertained during the turbo/clutch skits (that new guy with the mic sucks though).

Hey Old School! I also liked Shelby! I hear she is now directing the Golden State Warrior Girls. Check out their web site. Anyways, I guess you are all right. They are out their for eye candy and there really is nothing wrong with that. I just think that along with being eye candy, they don't have to be disrespected and classifed as being bimbos or girls who want to get close to the players. Yes, there may be one or two of them who wouldn't mind dating a player but not all of them. Besides, I think they have strict rules restricting that type of relationship. I am sure not all of them are star struck. I am sticking up for them because I have met some of them and they are real nice girls. Real professional (physical therapist, nurse, mother and a wife). I heard some of their stories. The girls I met were not that type. They were all in serious relationships or married. They were just doing it because they either danced professionally at one time and decided to stop but did not want to stop entirely. Others were involved in cheerleading/dancing at their college and wanted to continue at the same time continuing their career or family. They were far from being bimbos.

Exactly!!! How many of the fans at games know dance notation? It will always get boiled down to the least common denominator which is: eye candy.

I bet they do...I saw one of them hand Dr J, who was in town for the Drexler jersey retirement, what appeared to be her phone number. I was within 6 feet of Dr J so I know what I saw...but that's none of my bid'ness.

For the record, I don't think their dancing sucks. I think it's fine. I really haven't seen enough other dancers in person to compare them fairly. There are some good looking gals on the squad and some average. I think that's comparable to the other squads. My favorite was Shelby...she reminded me of Halle Berry...I wish she were still with the team.
