I only caught a lil bit about this on the radio. Not sure how legit the discussions are. Here is what I heard: ARod to Boston Nomar to Anaheim ???? to Rangers Has anyone else heard about this?? What players would be going to Texas??? This would have to be one of the biggest blockbusters in MLB in a long time.
Manny HAS to be part of this deal... Boston wants to get rid of him first and foremost. Manny and Nomar's contracts should = A-Rod's... so from that standpoint, the deal would make financial sense.
If this is true this is going to kill (the BBS) Nomar. Just remember that Linda is there to comfort you...
This would be an absolutely godawful move for the Red Sox. If this trade wen't down, I would have no confidence in the Red Sox administration, especially Luchino and Epstein. They fire Grady Little because he doesn't rely on statistics. Then they are willing to pay 12 million more dollars a season for a player who IF he is better, is only better by a very small margin. I've never argued on the BBS that Nomar is better than ARod because I didn't want to have that brought up everytime I said something. But in my heart, I think when you consider all factors, that it's true. ARod Career OBP - .382, Career OPS - .963 Nomar Career OBP - .370, Career OPS - .925 Nomar is on the rebound from a wrist injury, and this last season saw his HR total increase, and his strikeouts decrease. ARod, on the other hand, has changed his hitting philosophy and is now swinging for the fences every time; his batting average has decreased the past 3 seasons and his strikeout total has hovered around the 120-130 mark. Barry Bonds he isn't. And while Nomar's range factor and fielding ptc. are lower than ARods, his zone rating is lower also indicating that Nomar gets to unbelievable balls that nobody else gets to which leads to his errors total. Nomar also fits in well with his Boston teammates, and provides key leadership. ARod has proven that he doesn't know the meaning of the word leadership in his years at Texas. Besides all of the above, Nomar is a baseball icon in Boston. To trade him will hurt the team image. It would be like trading Ted Williams or Carl Yastrzemski. And for a team that has a home attendence of over a 100% capacity, that's going to hit hard in my opinion.
i do not understand this deal at all for the red sox. they get a guy who is an improvement at SS, but that is not their weak spot. their weak spot is their pitching...starters and closers. i figured wagner would be a perfect candidate for boston but i guess they didn't want to push hard for him. he came cheap as hell too. i know nomar didn't do crap in the stretch run and in the playoffs but he is still a great hitter and player. this makes no sense at all for the red sox.
If the Red Sox do this trade it's because they don't think they can resign both Nomar and Pedro next year when their contracts are up. Also I read somewhere that Nomar prefers to play in Cali and he might not resign with the Sox next year even if the Sox keep him. So if I was the Sox GM I would consider trading him now and get something rather than nothing later on.
So the solution to not being able to resign both Nomar and Pedro is to take on 12 million dollars a year in salary?
The Red Sox should use that extra money to fill any holes they have. Get quality players, speed, depth, etc. Teams with only a few stars and a bunch of scrubs (i.e. the Astros) don't seem to do well.
Maybe Plan A involved trading or waiving Manny to get ARod but since that didn't work they're on to Plan B which is moving Nomar to get ARod.
There was another trade rumor involving Manny and cash for Arod but the Rangers said they didn't want Manny.
In the trade, Texas is going to throw in some money too. But yeah I get what you are saying. As a Sox fan I would rather trade Nomar for another great shortstop than risk losing Nomar and getting nothing back in return. Btw, here's a article on boston.com about the trade rumor.
