Black Police Chief named in birthplace of the Klu Klux Klan

    The mayor of Pulaski says John Reynolds was the natural choice for chief of police.

    He's been with the department for 24 years.

    Mayor Dan Speer says the fact that Reynolds is black wasn't what set him apart from the eleven other applicants. His abilities did that.

    Reynolds says his race is probably a bigger deal outside the local community, which is known as the birthplace of the Ku Klux Klan.

    He says race doesn't matter in Pulaski and that's a community accomplishment.

    Reynolds says he's proud to serve city residents as their police chief.

    Alderman Mitchell Birdsong wrote some local history of his own 20 years ago when he became the town's first black vice mayor.

    Birdsong says choosing Reynolds as police chief happened because its time had come.

    I live about a hour and a half from Pulaski, and I can say that the people of that town are embarrassed that their town has that ugly historical black eye.

    Unfortunately, for them, they will always be reminded of that and I find that a little unfair.

    That has to be one of the greatest understatements ever.

    The Klan was more about hating Catholics than hating Blacks in the early days. Anyone else see that history chanel piece on the KKK?


    there at one time were over 2.5 million members. and the nations population was MUCH lower back then. It was a staggering % of the nations people.
