The problem is, just as LeBron > (insert player here), superteams with certain players on it will be better than other superteams. And veteran ring-chasers will go to the best super teams. While you think you're creating more parity, it might actually be counter-productive, in the long run. I don't have a solution to this, but I don't think a league of super teams is a good idea.
My memory might be failing me, but I don't remember young superstars hitting their prime forming superteams in the past. Can someone remind me of some teams where guys were in their prime and formed a superteam? If there is a few were they formed organically or through some collusion? I'm a big supporter of parity, I'm not a fan of where this NBA is going. Teams formed through collusion of stars is disgusting, I remember this happening in the past, though it was old men who were wanting to win before they retired. Teams formed more organically rather than in their prime superstars looking to ride each other's coattails? Am I wrong?
I think it is easier these days to form super teams as players with unique skillset can become Allstars. Take Draymond for example, he aint a scorer, he aint flashy, but he is a super glue guy with a balanced game and very good Defense. Take DeAndre Jordan. Take the one year where Kyle Korver was selected as an Allstar, that dude is a pure shooter nothing else. And it is relatively easy to tank and get a perimeter star or defensive enforcer these days, you got to draft right. The Rockets just happened to pile up on mediocre, undersized PFs and PGs in the past, nobody was interested to trade for. The old OKC team and the new Warriors have a good foundation of stars that they drafted, and acquired some more through trades and via Free Agency. The KD signing was a surprise but it is not like the Warriors were not contenders without KD.
They were a 73 win team that traded barnes for durant. They were already the best team in the nba and they added a top 3 player.
The end result is bad but I don't really blame the players. They are scrutinized so much these days. On these boards, David Robinson gets mocked so much that he is dominated by Hakeem. Fact is it's compliated. It maybe because of dodgy teammates or bad coaching or just bad day bad luck. But does the media or fans care? no, he is mocked as inferior. Why do you want to go through ALL that when you can create a better situation for yourself ? Durant needs to go through San Antonio AND Warriors AND Lebron to win a ring. That's just an impossible task. On the other hand Lebron could make cheap moves and cruise in the playoffs and hailed as chosen one. Durant says screw that.
I don't blame the players they are a product of their environment. Heck I would form a super team if I was in their shoes too. The majority of people would do that. Problem is with the rules and regulations of the NBA. I'm a Raptors and Rockets fan. These two teams have very little hope of winning the championship, why should I invest my time in a product like this? That's why I have chosen to quit until it changes. I think if this superteam trend continues, eventually more people will try out other entertainment options....and there are a lot out there. NBA will need to fix this cause it's not a good long term strategy. Having said that I'm not sure how the dynamics of TV money influence things.
I sure I hope CP3 goes to the Spurs & Gordon Hayward goes to the Celtics + the Celtics trade for PG13. This way the Warriors will have a legitimate challenger in the West and the Cavs will finally have a legitimate challenger int he East.
There isn't enough talent to really form another. We might see a great team, but how many more players are peaking at just the same time and are available via free agency to join together? Or heck, how many teams have assets strong enough to flip to put together a super team without losing their cores? You might be able to argue Boston does, but anyone else? Face it, unless the NBA does something about this, it really could be a 2 team league for 5 years. Give Harden some help, maybe the rockets can make some noise (with some good luck too). Give Boston Hayward and have Fultz show up a lot sooner and maybe Cleveland has trouble. Give the Spurs CP3 for free, maybe that does something. A lot of maybe's in that statement.
If anyone wants to win ... they have very few options to contend with the way the Warriors are set up... you have 3 maybe 4 options... The Spurs, Rockets, or Cavs... maybe Boston....
