Yeah, that's true. I'm not saying it's likely that they get a great defense or anything, but they need to re-tool in order to improve there. Too many 1 way players on our team right now. It'll take some time, but we knew that coming into the year.

    that's the opposite extreme.

Pop brought balance on both sides, that's what we need.

    Like when we had Hakeem!!

I don't think the Suns ever had a top 10 Drtg.

I mean never say never. But the truth is MDAs coaching philosophy likely makes having a decent defense impossible.

I guess you can point to the Warriors.
So sure if the Rockets can get a DPOY, a 20 ppg backcourt player that can d up, and 2 MVP candidate offensive players that happen to also play solid scheme defense, and a great wing defender off the bench .... then maybe MDA could have a good defensive team with his offensive style.

the point i'm making is that the scrub they brought in to replace Leonard played the way their coach wanted to for that position.

He might not be as good of a defensive player, but he has to show the same level of effort for the Spurs system to work.

Just like our system, we lose someone who jacks up 3s, we plug in someone who jacks up 3s

The problem is regarding TEAM defense, which is like a chain composed of separate links. When one link breaks in the chain, it no longer has strength. Rotations, pick-and-roll defense, off-the-ball, transition, etc. are all areas where one player on our team destroys the chain.

I'll give everyone one guess as to who that person is....

I hear you, but even if the players are not great defensively, they still have to give some kind of effort on that end. Check out Johnathan Simmons tonight, that guy was all over the floor, great effort. Add in the multiple blocked shots and steals, well the Spurs are coached to play D.

Which is why I believe D'Antoni system will never get us anywhere until there is improvement in the defensive department. You can't just trade buckets or hope to outscore the opponent. I believe tonight really showcased that flaw: not hitting the 3 or offense goes cold = game over.

The warriors have Draymon and Klay who are both good defensive players, plus all their players have length . Iggy, Livingston, JaVale

    all long and athletic

But he is known for defense and he is young and athletic and he is being coached by one of the great defensive coaches ever. He's in the right situation with the right tools. Up to Morey to do the same and get similar players.

    Yes. Exactly what I said.
MDA might be able to have a top 5 defensive team... if the Rockets defensive talent all of a sudden becomes 25x better. Not going to happen.

And even then you'd still have Harden....

Apparently, the Spurs have a gold mine detector when it comes to finding players.

sign james johnson, sign james johnson, sign james johnson, trade for tj mcconnell, get lucky with gordon hayward, and acquire a genuine backup c.

    bev, mcconnell
    harden
    hayward, ariza
    johnson

Defense isn't rocket science. It's mostly about effort 1 and positioning 2. The problem isn't really D'Antoni or Harden. It's Morey and the fact that he doesn't REQUIRE some baseline level of defense from every player on the roster before giving them a contract.

It's cute that Harden's post-defense is actually good. Still, it's embarrassing that we consider this to be a viable strategy because of how awful our PFs are and have been for years on defense. Can we please get a big that can stop LaMarcus Aldridge, or at least match him point for point? Blake Griffin would be acceptable.

How many have we had in year's past? Spurs, Warriors, Cavs?

I might not even get greedy expecting seven once Paul returns. Five could be sufficient.
