I don't want to hear after this game that Harden played hurt or any other excuse.

FIRST GAME ALL SEASON LONG I HAVE GIVEN UP AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 3RD!

 

Bull. Harden has been coddled and unconditionally defended too much.

One of the reasons Tony Parker and Manu Ginobilli are future Hall of Famers and champions is because Poppovich held them accountable when they played badly and/or out-of-control. The closest anyone has ever come to doing that for Harden was when McHale benched him in Game 6 against the Clips. Frankly, that should have been done again during the first 6 games of the next season, when he clearly was disinterested in playing like a pro.

Harden can be a brilliant player, but he lacks the mental focus, the energy and most importantly, the consistency to be the top guy. He can win a game by himself one night and lose the next game by himself a day later. He will make a great steal one play and then will lose his man on a basic cut the next 3 plays. He'll make a surgically precise between-a-defender's-legs pass in the first half but then often passes the ball at the perimeter shooters' feet on basic drive-and-kick play. He'll hit a crazy long covered three and then will miss (or pass up) wide open threes the rest of the game.

All this makes him both thrilling and maddening to watch. A better coach would have stressed and reinforced the importance of the small things - protecting the ball, passing accurately, taking the open shot - but I think that ship has sailed. Harden is too rich, too self-satisfied and too conditioned to change his ways. We'd have to add a clear Hall of Fame caliber player with a major alpha dog personality to get Harden to even respond to criticism, let alone change.

Some players just aren't winners and Harden has proven that every playoff since his first year here.
